Upgrading memory on Mac Pro

I've just taken over a Mac Pro with 1GB memory installed, which is definitely lacking for today's demands. I'd like to upgrade (or replace entirely) the memory with at least 4GB of RAM. The system is currently running Snow Leopard, and it has Dual Core Intel Xenon 2.66Ghz processor with a 1.33GHz bus. The existing RAM is a DDR-2 FB DIMM 667Mhz memory.

What should I be buying to replace the RAM?

buy back the same type of ram (DDR-2 667Mhz ) that is currently using on this macbook.

note that the screws for opening macbook pro for the ram portion is different... it using torx 6 screws...

i have this screw driver so if u need to open up, we can meet in town. :)

There's a big difference between a "MAC PRO" and a "MACBOOK PRO". And I think NEO is mentioning about a MAC PRO.

1. Get the same type of RAM as mentioned. (DDR-2 DIMM 667 Mhz) . (SO-DIMM for MBPro DIMM for MacPro)
2. Open the latch behind the MacPro to open its side door.
3. Touch any part of the the metal chassis or wear a grounding strap.
4. Slide the tray out (tray 1 or tray 2) and make sure that your desk/table is padded before you replace/add the Ram.
5. Slide back the tray on its original state. Put back the side door.
6. Done

Hi mixMotion, do you know if they still sell this type of RAM? I was thinking they might be out of production for such a old model (DDR2 is quite rare). Is it possible for me to use DDR3 RAM instead (if I remove the original RAM modules completely)?

Hi Neo,

I would recommend you ask MemoryWorld at either Sim Lim Square or Funan. They specialise in RAM for MACs. They would know which type of RAM to use for the different types of MACs.

Try not to guess the type of RAM to use. You may end up buying the wrong one.

Just my two cents.

Cheerio !! :)

all comps mac or pc shld work on the same type of ram... since ur comp runs DDR2 @ 667mhz, it shld be able to run DDR2@800mhz (but dun try ur luck with DDR2@1066mhz).. as for DDR3.. dun bother, ddr2 wont work with ddr3

I have bad experiences with RAM of a different brand. I will suggest go for brand new same batch of RAM.

I have 14gb of this RAM. Woohoo

For my Mac Pro 2 x 2.66, I bought 16GB (2x8GB) 667MHz DDR 2 FB-DIMM from someone, and they're extracted from a HP server. Works perfectly.

But if you couldn't find a cheap 2nd hand RAM, you can go and get a brand new one from SGL (sim lim square 2nd level). Remember to tell them it's the 'large heatsink' version, fully buffered (ECC).. They will know.. and won't misinterpret it for macbook pro's RAM.

Does anyone knows where I can bring my Macbook pro 15" to change to a larger HDD? Want to upgrade from 250 to 500 GB but I'm technically challenged.

Cheers,

Cheers,

Depending on which model of MBP 15" (if the battery is build-in one, meaning recent models, it is very easy to DIY. If the battery is user-replaceable one, then it is harder to DIY, but still do-able. Anyway, I DIY on both with success (changed the HDD to SSD), not that challenging. (I simply follow this guide to a T.)

If you prefer to pay and let someone else do it, I strongly recommend SGL @SLS, 2nd level #02-22. They are authorised Apple reseller. Small shop but professional and friendly. Reasonable price also. (probably $100 or there about.)

Cheers,

Any recommendations? :)

...also, will it void my apple warranty?

haha i am not pro lah ;p u want i can help u change but by changing, it actually voids the warranty by theory... but thats what everyone is doing... if got problem... just put back the original hardware and send for servicing... simple as that... there is no seal... so they cannot say u dismantle before :x
