There is a massive bug in the USB drivers for external drives that will cause data loss. If you are using an external USB drive for storing any important data, disconnect it from any Leopard (10.5.1) systems that you have, and don't use it until you know this bug has been fixed. Note that this also applies to any USB-based hardware, such as a camera.

erm. does this affect raw files?

i have about 1000 raw files on my MBP.. have not transferred to external HDD yet tho.. i used USB to transfer from camera directly or via card reader.. so far no issues at all

basically this guy transferred files like all of us do
never suspecting anything wrong until he did a check (checksum test or if jpg jus view the pic)

there is a new leopard 10.5.2 upgrade not sure if it solves the prob..
ROFL some1 called apple sg and apparently the reply he got was apple can't read fat formatted hdd (which is wat usb hdd use for maximum compatibility)

im using leopard for some time with external HDD via USB so far no problems leh...photos in lightroom all ok...export to photoshop ok...videos are also ok...maybe hardware related...

anyway planning to get a bigger HDD with FireWire later...

As far as I know, that bug had been fixed in 10.5.1, since it was on the list of things and people on MacRumors and other legitimate sites hadn't been mentioning further trouble.

10.5.2 has other, more interesting things happening for me, but I'm sure a lot of things are fixed. It's just painfully slow for my PowerPC-based machine.

i had a vosonic vp5500 with sata hard disk format in FAT32, which also not able to detect by my mac os 10.5. make a call to apple singapore and was tell it will not able to read FAT format. but it work well when i boot it to window xp by bootcamp.

hmmm actually why dun you try the experiment?
move a couple of large files across partitions..
then do random checksums test on the files?

am willing to do the expt for public service if anyone donates a mac for me .. keke loan also can lah ..

Update: The bug occurs regardless of the type of destination being moved to (whether it’s local USB, local Firewire, SMB, etc.). Also, I have been informed that this bug goes back all the way to Panther.

Definitely software.
I find Vista more compatible on my Macbook than Leopard.

In Leopard, it can't detect my external OTG HDD, FAT32 if u'd like to know.
But when boot to Vista, everything works fine.

So I used the FAT32 HDD and installed it into another cleapo external casing, and it works in both OSes.

Results back.

I tried with USB flashdrive.

Tried to move a file to the target folder and I plugged the flashdrive out while the file is still moving.
Finder prompted error. Had to relaunch finder because the progress window is still running although there's already no more flashdrive.

Nothing was inside the target folder, of course.

The file, 300++mb, was still in the flash drive.
No data loss.

Later I try again with a USB external harddisk with a huge photoshop file.

Power off while moving still in progress. Of course the file didn't manage to move over to the target. When I power back the external harddisk, data is still intact.

Test 2:
Moving target folder when moving of file still in progress.

i got a reply about the bug
it seems like it is present in 10.5.1
but uncertain about 10.5.2

i think the other thing that parka can do is to transfer a few large files and do a md5 check on the source file and the newly copied file in the usb HDD
that's how you can know if there's a difference between the copied file. and whether it copied with any errors or not.

updated to 10.5.2 and find that it's slower, and more problems with wireless connections.

Ive had no problems with using usb drives, even when i was using 10.5/10.5.1. I might be lucky.

As with wireless connection with 10.5.2. my signal seems to be better?
