Singapore says has not yet awarded casino licence to Genting

SINGAPORE, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Singapore said it has not yet awarded a casino licence to Genting Bhd. , even though the Malaysian gaming group won a tender in December giving it the right to build and run a $3.4-billion resort in the city-state.

Genting's two affiliates Star Cruises and Genting International caught the authorities by surprise last month when they announced a separate tie-up with Macau gambling tycoon Stanley Ho.

"The signing of the development agreement and the issuance of a casino licence are two separate matters," Singapore's Ministry of Home Affairs casino regulator said in an emailed statement on Tuesday.

"The signing of the development agreement allows Genting International and Star Cruises to proceed with the construction of the integrated resort. However, it does not automatically qualify them for the casino licence, which is needed before it can operate the future casino."

On Thursday, Genting is due to sign an agreement with Sentosa Development Corp., a government-owned body which runs the resort island where the casino will be built.

Simple...........stanley ho has bad reputation...............nobody asks genting to tie up with stanley. The genting group didnt do their homework...they should know singapore dont tolerate triads................so they shouldnt tie up with stanley. Singapore government is not stupid. Genting is very much welcomed but not stanley. So Genting should behave in the first place.

yes it can never be that clean but not stanley ho who has huge bad reputation. as again i said why stanley when there are so many investors around??????? genting is the one responsible for their own share price. Singapore government is ready to give them the licence until stanley ho showed interest. genting can say no but they didnt. so there is an issue now.

there is no problem with sands...................dont forget that.......yes yes singapore government is not perfect..........but i think they are doing the right job by refusing stanley ho. Casino itself is already a sensitive issue so we dont need colourful character like stanley to add to more problems.

If anything, it just reflect badly on Singapore. Genting and its subsidiaries are public listed companies, their shares can be purchased by anyone. Singapore award to Genting and not its shareholders. How can we even try to be financial hub if the government even fail to realise this?

the government has the right to reject the issuance of license, i don't see anything wrong with that. there's no precedent to the legal running of casino within singapore anyway, it's only natural that more precautions are taken.
