Tripod or Monopod

Hi all,

am going with my family to Melbourne, Aus. Most likely going to Philip Island and penguin watching. Currently i do not need/own a tripod and i just got a used 70-200 f/2.8 VR lens. Wonder is it more economical / convenient for me to get a monopod over the tripod.

or do i need a pod at all....??? :dunno: :sweat:

VR and monopod helps to reduce camera shake but are not as effective as tripods which would allow you to take night scenery.

Tripod. you won't be able to make a monopod stand on its own when using self timer.
If you don't want the hassle of carrying either, then can also consider bringing along a beanbag, but will always have to find a handy structure to support.

Hi,

Just for your info, no photography or video allow when watching penguin parade. Wardens will be patrolling at the viewing site. Be prepared to face the cold breeze and long waits for the penguins to arrive.

NO PHOTOGRAPHY ALLOWED...(flash or not)

apparently, some pple spoilt the mkt by using flash regardless of the restriction.

Not entirely true, there are monopods that come with detachable tripod legs.

Well... I've been to philip island 4 times, and despite saying "No photography", you can pretty much get away if you don't use a flash. Unfortunately, its so dark that you may not be able to get any good shots anyway (I went 4 times, and no shots of penguins... but then my photography skill sucked then). So just sit back and enjoy.

I suggest a tripod. Cos you'll also want to drop down to Southbank for night shots of the Yarra River. Also, the hourly flaming chimneys of Crown Casino can be quite specticular (though not as great as it was when it first started).

Btw, can anyone advise on camera settings when trying to shoot those flames with a backgroud of the crowd?
