trigger flash gun with built in function on camera

im currently use d90.....would like to check with those who have speedlight....

d90 pop up flash is able to trigger (wireless) flashgun....but is it possible for the flash gun to fire only...without having the popup flash to fire

it can be done, and it's in your manual. go read it again

If you're referring to Nikon AWL with the pop-up as commander, it needs to fire to trigger the remote speedlights. However, it can be set such that it does not contribute to the exposure.

under menu "Bracketing/Flash" to go into commander mode. you can set the built-in flash to "--" so it wont affect the lighting, but it will still pre-flash to trigger the remote flash.
