D3S, lenses that I have: 24mm f1.4, 14-24mm f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, 50mm f1.8D, 85mm f1.4, 105mm f2.8 Micro.

Switzerland, Italy, Germany.

Not going to bring tripod but will bring the SB-910.

I need to cover landscape, some close up although no need 1:1, some evening shots.

Say I can only carry 3 lenses. Which one would you recommend?

14-24mm and 24-70mm.
throw in a light 50mm too.
thats what i would bring. not sure about u though.

Again..the reply going to be..you are the photographer..you're there taking the photos not us..you should decide what to bring and not follow what others think...

Well..my pick will be 24mm f1.4, 14-24mm f2.8, 24-70 f2.8...

24mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.4

I suggest you just bring 24-70. Your other lenses focal lengths do not differ much from 24-70 significantly. I brought 14-24 to Switzerland and a few other places but find it quite underutilized.

I travelled many times to Europe with my D3s with the following lenses

14-24 (10% usage)
24-70 (65% usage)
70-200 (25% usage)

Thanks guys.

I am thinking of 14-24 for landscape, 24-70 for general use (70-80% of the time I think) shoot the normal photos, and 24mm for darker scenes or when I want that narrow DOF. With Macbook air and SB-910, the weight of the Thinktank streetwalker is about 9.5kg.

Question now is should I take out the 24mm f1.4 and bring a tripod instead?

If you are flying between cities, a tripod will charge you more for the check-in luggage.

If you have a light tripod, why not.. btw, is going to be spring soon.. get a lens that able to capture wildflower..

Travel photography usually do not have much time to shoot macro. Unless you are shooting portraits,
if not a large aperture lens is not much use. Shooting landscapes must have sufficient depth of field,
must use the small aperture, some times even had to add on polarizer or ND filter to do long exposure,
so if no tripod then is no good photos.

About 30 years ago, I took about 70 roll of film with my Nikon F4s travel Switzerland, Germany, Austria,
Netherlands, Italy and other countries. To sum up, the most commonly used lens as follows (as today lens):
24-70mm
70-200mm
16-35mm

My choice today will be:
PCE 24mm f3.5 for Churches and architecture
16-35mm f4 VR for landscapes
24-70mm f2.8 for General and landscapes
70-200mm f2.8 VR for landscapes and portraits
Camera D3x (or the new D800E)
Gitzo GT2540FL Carbon Fiber Tripod + RRS BH-55 Full-Size Ballhead

Wish you have a memorable journey, and brought back many wonderful pictures to share with us. :)
