hi guys and girls

im looking for 1 traveling backpack for those long distance and duration trip. Are there any good recommendation ??

I heard that for Deuter brand, the inner waterproof lining tends to come out easily or after some prolong usage... Do other brands suffer the same problem ?

im thinking to get a backpack that can carry at least 50L ++ + 10L. So will welcome and appreciate for any recommendation. Thanks ! :D

thanks, army market is actually quite near to my office. will check there also :D

Bro,
Please check out the shops at Golden Mile Food Centre...

There's one corner shop in one of the inside lanes (I can give you the unit # tomorrow, as I will be going there...) run by a very nice auntie. She has a huge selection of backpacks and her prices are very very reasonable.

I bought a 60L Karrimor last year. Can't remember how much I paid, but it was less than 200 bucks...

Definitely not Deuter :thumbsd: as the inner lining comes off after some use...

I use Karrimor. Pretty durable.

Ya, it's true but also not just Deuter. It depend how you use it and take care of it. Weather play a very big part when u storing it when not in use.

I have one 60L (If i not wrong) but mine is the "Katama"

Even it without the waterproof lining problems, i always pack my stuff into big Zip Lock bag as it just my habits.

If you dun mind, u can use mine. At least you can save the $$$ for your trip.

I bought 1 backpack in vietnam for $15 SGD. sadly to say, its not very good as i only found out that it can only carry very little clothing...

Not really sure of the closing time. I've always gone during afternoons on weekends or weekdays.

Do note that quite a few shops are closed on Mondays.

I've bought many things from the market there. And all my friends buy their backpacking stuff from there too. I have never come across any reports that the backpacks are fake.

;) okie dokie, happy for the search :D

Get Tatonka. Reasonably priced and good quality

In Singapore, you're spoilt for choices of brands as it's a free trade area.

You'll notice that usually travellers from USA will use Mountainsmith, REI and Osprey while travellers from Germany Vaude, Tatonka and Sweden Haglofs. The New Zealand brand like Macpac and Fairydown are expensive and the functions are not up to speed with their USA counterparts.

I'm not sure what are you requirements as there are two type of design for a travel pack, the panel opening where it opens like a suitcase and the toploader used frequently by mountaineers. Both have their pros and cons.

A good shop to recommend is the Sports Connection at Shaw leisure gallery and if you want the "atas" range like Mountainsmith and Arcteryx, you can go to Campers Corner.

I agree Macpac is good too. Golden Mile Food centre upstairs is a good place to buy as recommended by others here. Can also get black trash-bags to put inside your backpack - SAF style.:bsmilie:

I always get some supplies from CQMS when I go back for ICT. :bsmilie: These days its those clear ones, some are thicker and stronger.

If your Deuter or any bag internal lining gets peel off, use trash bags. I also pack my stuffs into ziplock bags.....really like field pack style. :bsmilie: This is no longer splash proof, its soak proof!

I think Tatonka and Karrimor are quite good and depending on your application, Eagle Creek is very good as well. Eagle Creek stuff are excellent and are famous for their packing solutions like folders, sacs and cubes and toiletries bag. http://www.eaglecreek.com/bags_luggage/

Bro,
In case you haven't gone to the Army market, the shop that I always go to is #02-160. The people who run that shop are very friendly people . When I bought my backpack, I tried at least 20 different models and the auntie didn't say a word. She patiently let me try one backpack after another.
Cheers

To be frank, the choice of backpack will depend on whether you need a technical pack and also your budget. When on a tight budget, the army market or sports connection will be a good choice. Did I say the backpacks at the Jalan Besar market are not real stuff.

There're some reliable brands around and have been known for their expertise in designing backpacks that are durable and ergonomic (aka comfortable). Macpac is one good brand but suffers from heavy materials used, but it is made with Corduroy which has 3x tearing strength of leather. Good for really rugged terrains.

The other brands that I would recommend would be Lafuma (France), Karrimor (UK), Arteryx (Spain) or Invicta (France). These are company that have devited many resources in the R&D to produce good products and I must say they're very comfortable. Their technical packs are just as good if you are into technical mountaineering.

Go to Outdoor Specialist (peninsula Plaza 2nd flr), Camper's corner (Capitol Building), Adventure 21 at Chinatown point and you can find these packs. May be pricey but definitely worth the money. How I know? Becos I have owned and used all these brands in the last 12 years in technical mountaineering.

tried deuter, lafuma, tatonka and vaude and my vote goes to lafuma or vaude. certain models from vaude are using a light-yet strong material and their design is very neat. the straps will have a place to hold on to and won't be left dangling like tatonka's case. deuter's material is thick but heavy/bulky which is the main reason most of my friends have switched to vaude instead.

i do not recommend getting the fake one because the material is heavier and ergonomically the design is poor even though it might look the same as genuine one.
