OK let me rephrase my statement. (This has become) another PRC people bashing thread. Perhaps this is not your original intention and I’ll give that to you. Based on what I can see in this forum, I can say that you're a sensible person.

I would not blame them for coming here because they want to better their lives. If you really want to find fault, you might want to consider the transport operators as they're the ones who hired them in the first place.

Thanks for the rephrase, rightly I did not start thread for that purpose but I also realised that most people had raised concerns that are valid.

What I observed is that having FTs per se is not bad... just that the integration process could have been done better. I think for fine-tuning coupled the proper integration process and add that for employers who really cannot find any local that are willing to do the job at same pay only then FT be employed? that seem fair or unfair? of course, the employers will say they must be given the free will to choose.

But social problems exists if everyone is given free will is it not? so somehow there must be a trade-off.

I think the reason is because we have realized it is not an illusion that there are more and more ft of a certain race here... and considering how our govt always say FT are educated folks... our FTs are from the poorest part of their country, mainly uneducated fellows who cannot speak English.

I have nothing against them and look at it this way.. they have setup their enclaves and they are here to stay. Just look at Geylang... not the streetwalkers but the restaurants serving authetic FT cuisine, incidentally I just had lunch there last week. Yummy.

The fact is our govt is aggressively importing these FTs not considering their educational levels etc... in a way I think it can be seens as using them to artificially increasing the population and also yes doing what locals dont want to do.

The problem is Singapore is too small. How many graduates can it support? Hence some of us will have to travel out to find our niche and how many will do that? As for those who stay back well u got to compete with FTs.

Having cheap and good labor also has it's own drawbacks, that being employers can now squeeze their staff as the theory is u dont do the job, I can employ a FT, afterall how difficult is it to get them PR to bypass how many percent of employees must be Singaporean or PR rule.

End of day we have to work harder and constantly be on our toes... the years of comfort are over and perhaps the problem is our govt's nannying has made us softies who dont have drive. If u want something fight for it... if not you can't blame these FTs who are hungry to make it from snatching it from you.

I think the FTs than MM referred to are the PMETs, not those unskilled low cost ones that roam the streets of Geylang. I totally agree with you that Singapore is small and with very little or no resources, hence we cannot afford the kind of protectionism policy that certain countries are practising. In order to make sure that Singapore survive, the key is to stay ahead and not be complacent.

Unfortunately from my own experience, FTs generally seem to be more hungry than the typical Singaporean. The drive they possess is sorely lacking amongst Singaporeans, me included.

It is a phase that humans go thru...

1) Food, once we have that
2) Start family and have roof over our heads, once we have that
3) Extras like hobbies, travel, culture etc.. etc..

Their hunger will also reach a stage when they are no longer as hungry after they have attained that, it is a cycle thingy, then what? get from where? are we digging in deeper making problems convoluted?

I beg to differ... I think our govt is taking in even the unskilled low cost ones. Based on the belief they are more likely to stay on as compared to the PMETs who are just using us as stepping stone for US. The govt is banking on them to stay cos they cant go anywhere else and then their 2nd generation to integrate.

The unskilled men are very likely to go home and live like mini-kings after making enough dough. The women might be tempted to marry locals, but getting citizenship for unskilled women is not easy.
Most PMETs might move on, but there are some who have continued to stay on.

many unskilled ones are staying on... recently one newly commissioned officer's dad as a laborer who became contractor. Didnt have education but still given PR. And now they integrate his son by making him an officer.

These are the ones that really worked their way up. I believe they don't make his son an officer just for integration. I still believe that we practice meritocracy here.

My apologies I didnt mean he was made an officer to integrate him. I should rephrase he was made an officer and should be on the way to integration into our society. But that article was funny... it only showed all the FT officers but what abt those that became men and specs? Are they less worthy?

I suppose we take in the unskilled ones coz they are much needed to 'do hard labour' that Singaporeans do not want to do for many reasons.

I think its because 2nd generation PRs becoming officers have more newsvalue lah. The men and specs are still worthy just not so newsworthy.
