correct me if I am wrong? (in order of appearance)

1) Tokina 28-70mm F2.8 AT-X (orange ring)
2) Tokina 28-70mm F2.8 AT-X Pro (gold ring)
3) Tokina 28-70mm F2.6-2.8 AT-X Pro (gold ring)
4) Tokina 28-70mm F2.6-2.8 AT-X Pro II (gold ring with crinkle barrel)
5) Tokina 28-70mm F2.8 AT-X Pro SV (latest edition)

there seems to be a lot of confusion amongst the versions. Did I leave out a particular one?

ckiang,

Any opinion on the Tokina 28-80/2.8? I heard it has quite bad flaring and ghosting problem. Unfortunately Nikon has no f/2.8 lenses around this range except the AFS 28-70/2.8... :(

Tokina 28-70mm F2.8 AT-X Pro SV (latest edition)

This is new to me. What's SV stands for? Where can I get info on this lens? Is the AF/MF ring design same as the 28-80mm f2.8?

1) Tokina 28-70mm F2.8 AT-X (orange ring)
2) Tokina 28-70mm F2.8 AT-X Pro (gold ring)
3) Tokina 28-70mm F2.6-2.8 AT-X Pro (gold ring)
4) Tokina 28-70mm F2.6-2.8 AT-X Pro II (gold ring with crinkle barrel)
5) Tokina 28-70mm F2.8 AT-X Pro SV (latest edition)

Anybody has pictures/photos or even owning this/these lens/es? Maybe we can compile a page showing all the varients...nice, right? Should include the 28-80mm too.

I can do the compile job, just send me the pics...at koh77@yahoo.com. Credit will be given...;)

As far as I can gather from shops and reviews, the 28-70 f2.6-2.8 is optically better, other than the MF/AF switching quirk.

Oh, Nikon does have the other mid-zoom which is f/2.8. The Nikkor AF 35-70mm f/2.8D.

hmm.. which of these would you advise one to get? intend to upgrade my exising mid-zoom lens to something faster.

and how much would it roughly cost?

thanks in advance.

I'd recommend the 28-70 f/2.6-2.8 Pro or Pro II and live with the quirk in the AF/MF switching (must return focussing ring to the smae position you are at when you switch to the other mode). Optically, it's better. It's based on the design of the legendary Angenieux 28-70 f/2.6-2.8. The Pro II costs $650 at Cathay for Nikon and Minolta mounts. For Canon mount, it's $700+.

another disadvantage of Pro or PRO II 28-70mm is the minimum focusing distance 70cm, compare to PRO 28-80mm is 50cm, or Sigma is 40cm.

Oh yes, I forgot that. ;p

I tested a Sickma 24-70 f2.8 and it's very soft. The Tokina is a better lens. And the Tokinas are all built like a tank.

yes, I prefer TOkina too, but the PRO 28-80mm.

I think version 2) does not exist and version 5) is the 28-80 version.....

Version 2 exists, it's sitting at Alan Photo right now. Version 5 is NOT the 28-80, version 5 was just announced, it's not even out in the stores yet.

Learn Japanese and go to Tokina's website. :D

Super value? I noticed it's damn cheap.
