I'm planning a Tibet trip F&E in May 06.

Intend to get air tickets to Chengdu, then while staying in a backpakers hostel there, utilise their services they offer organising budget tours to Tibet. Problem is, I wonder how long they would take to get all travel documents and permits completed and approved for travel to Tibet frm Chengdu.

Anyone have any expeience and advice to offer? Many thanks..!

There are local driving/trekking tours available there which u can take up. Theres this nice guesthouse in Chengdu (Sim's guesthouse run by a Singaporean guy and jap wife) recommended by those on LP.....think they can apply the permit beforehand for u...

Why don't you do a search in CS and offstone.
Many questions you posted have been answered before. ;)

I have done a trip via Nepal, the time frame they used to process entry permit to Tibet is only 1 day. ( over night collection at worse ). As for Chengdu, i guess it is the same.
Thanks

there are many ways to get in tibet from chengdu. if you go via flight, you have to get the documents. via land.. just hide your passport and go..so long as you look chinese and speaks good madarin.. not the singapore style. journey wise, it takes at least 1 week to be comfortable, but this does not make sense. i took about 24 days to arrive in lhasa. from sichuan, take either the trans sechuan tibetian highway G317 (southern) or G318 (northern) route. G317 can be accessed from Yunan's Deqing province. The major checkpoint for G318 is beyond Dege crossing the jinshajiang, which you have to be careful. The checkpoint for G317 is beyond Makang.

nov? It will be very cold then. I was in Yunan during december. Not a single blade of leafs. However, it will be a good time to look at the various snowy mountains.

Impt trival.

Dont have pictures or books by the Dalai Lama on you. If these are found, you can be arrested for subversive activities.

is quite fast, well actually depends on luck ah. but within 2 days confirm.
hmm accordingly to a friend... undertable methods work faster :p

yap, dun have any political stuff on ya, dangerous. might end up having to explain a lot.
also, get the local singapore consulate numbers on u from chengdu (if there's one). helps if u run into problems.

prepare some green notes. You will need it at times for those undertable tactics :bsmilie:
But keep them away from sight, else 1 time every single note will be gone

I did a china IC instead of applying all those permit.... too expensive.. 200usd i think... for a piece of crap(wat permit to enter tibet)... just walk around in Chengdu and u'll spot some telephone number saying 'applying credentials' (办证)... just call and pay 50-100RMB to get one.. and DO IT AT UR OWN RISK~! if u r caught red-handed then i think they'll shoot u with their missile at all cost... hehe
