Tibet - Please comment on this itinerary

Hi,

Your itinerary is quite different from mine, makes me want to go again ... :)

some things to add -
- General, no matter which itinerary , you are going to spend alot of time on the road, so do have some spare time on the road for shooting

- Season - Personal preference - Consider pushing back your trip one or 2 months (June/July). The scenery would be better, more greenery / flowers. May is still pretty bleak in some areas

- Vehicle - If you have enough budget / people , request for Toyota Land Cruiser
( model is 4500 i think), you butt will thank you for that , plus its alot faster then the China LeiBao. Especially on mountain ascending and dirt roads, its 30% faster, save you lots of time

Yes, yes, there is a part that they would use the 4500 (from Lhasa to the Everest Base Camp).

Yup, similar to my Xinjiang trip, am prepared for a lot of time on the road between locations but the point about going 2 months later is a good input. Tks.

The itinerary has been revised to focus more on Tibet.

Yup, similar to my Xinjiang trip, am prepared for a lot of time on the road between locations but the point about going 2 months later is a good input. Tks.

June - September is rainy season in Tibet.

Have always wanted to visit Tibet on a photography trip but missed the trip someone here in CS went last year and haven't seen anything quite close to that so far. Just came across this recently (same agency that I went with for my recent Northern Xinjiang trip) but am not too certain if the places covered or if the planned itinerary is too rushed (though I sort of think it is ok since the last experience with the agency but would still be good to hear from you). Wonder if any of you who have gone there would like to share your experience, comment on the itinerary and that may help me decide if I should consider this. Your inputs will be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately the itinerary is in Chinese only at the moment (will try to get hold on the English version). Also, somehow they have got other places like Kangding, included. I sure hope they would put more time in Tibet instead.

Thanks in advance. I really hope to make this life-long dream come true. That's why I am planning so far ahead :) A bit kiasu considering that the trip is only happening on 14 May 2011 :)

... this is stressing us to read the wordy itinerary...

just like to know will be this be a photography trip or a just be there and take in the sight and scenery and photography comes at a lower priority?

haha, sorry for that. a simplified English translation is on the way. if the last trip to Northern Xinjiang can be used as a reference, then i would say it would be a photography trip. i am purely basing that on the opportunities i had then which included many sunrise/sunset. the tour also takes into account the timing for better lighting, and stuffs like that.

my skill is so-so but these photos i posted may give u a rough idea of the opportunities i had during the last trip and i am looking forward to more photography opportunities in this trip...

Your skills are more than just "so-so".

Your skills are more than just "so-so".

Photography is a life-long learning process...and it will always be so-so when one looks back to his photos taken yesterday :)

I have just increased the font size for the itinerary to make reading it easier :)

looks like many places are covered.. i wonder if you would really have time to "enjoy" the scenery or not. But then i have not been there so cannot really comment on it. How much would it cost overall including the air ticket? I would like to go there also if time and pocket permits :)

Frankly I had the same reservations as you when I went for the Northern Xinjiang trip but fortunately thanks to the meticulous planning by the organizer, we were able to spend quality time at most if not all of the locations (due to bad weather, then too bad). I sure hope this coming trip is no exception :) The cost inclusive of all air tickets is around $3200 based on twin sharing basis.

Here I have the simplified English version of the itinerary, for those who may be interested to learn more about the trip.
Please feel free to comment or ask me more details regarding the trip.

Looks like an interesting trip. Can you share the name of the travel agency you are using and inform whether they specialise in photographic tours? Thanks.

The travel agency is GreenIslandTour at www.greenisland.com.sg It is the same agency I went for my Northern Xinjiang trip. I won't dare to say that they are specialised in photographic tours (but I believe they are exploring this possibility) but I can say the Northern Xinjiang trip was one just as advertised. So if that is any standard to take reference from, I sure look forward to the coming Tibet trip. One thing to note is that the lady bosses of this agency are also avid photographers. If what I understand is correct, they had also engaged China photographers on some trips in the past. Hope this helps :)

Thanks for the contact. Can already hear the lyrics of the song in my head.

Just a quick update for those who may be interested. I checked with the agency, the max group size is 20 and they already have 12 or 13 right now. Looks like it is a go and I am looking forward to it :)

Hi, went there 10yrs ago. From Nepal into Lahsa on road.

The itinery seems v tight, back to back on the road. Check the weather and dry/wet season. I went in end autumn, it was dry cold and dusty; my friend went in end spring summer, it was wet and muddy on dirt road.

There are a lot of prayers' activity around temples, from dawn. Recommend to stretch day over any city, and recommend to spend early hours walking when the light is still soft.

The itinery seems to travel to standard places, I think it remains a control area and hence control and guided tour only. You won't be able to depart from the standard itin.

Gradual ascent to high ground is good, to avoid AMS.

Have fun!

tks for you inputs :)
I really hope there is sufficient time catered for photography.

I went to Tibet in April this year. We took a train from Beijing to Lhasa. It is a long journey, took us 48 hrs to reach Lhasa, painful but the scenery is very beautiful.

Our itinerary was

Lhasa - Gyangtse - Shigatse -Everest Base Camp - Shigatse - Namtso Lake - Lhasa. We travelled by van.

Journey is very long. The higher altitude is at EBC @ 5200m.

You need to be careful of high altitude sickness. It can be very serious if not taking good care of your health.

Go to Nyingchi first at the latitude is almost same as Lhasa. You need about 2-3 days to adapt to altitude of 3300m in Lhasa.
