the true size of a CF card

hi..people...
i would like to ask something...
wat is the true size of a CF card...
cos i just bought my card...n my card after formatting is only 488mb...the card is a 512 card...
is it anything wrong with it...
how come will like tat...care to explain...it is over 20mb lost lerh..

storage manufacturers' convention is to advertise 1k = 1000, while file system convention is 1k =1024.

so 512mb advertised = 512,000,000b
while actual space is actually 512,000,000 / (1024*1024) = 488mb

industry 1000 Byte= 1KB , 1000 KB = 1MB
window 1024 Byte = 1KB, 1024KB = 1MB

Volatile storage (e.g. RAM, cache) and non-volatile storage (e.g. HDD, CF, SD) have different and misleading size definitions. Look at the small print of Dell advertisments, they will always tell you 1 MB = 1,000 bytes.

For volatile storage and computer science definition, 1 KB = 1,024 (2^10) bytes, 1 MB = 1,024 KB, 1 GB = 1,024 MB and so on.

For non-volatile storage and HDD manufacturers definition, 1 KB = 1,000 (10^3) bytes, 1 MB = 1,000 KB, 1 GB = 1,000 MB, etc.

erm....this person got the same problem as me...this website

but he is able to solve it...
how come i can't..
i format the card on my camera also no use....
it still remains at 488mb..instead of a 512mb...
so wat is the problem...anyway m i able to do a exchange..cos the card got a 5 yr warrenty right...it is a lexar card....erm...where can do>???

Nope. CF is a non-volatile memory, i.e. contents not lost when power supplied to memory is cut off.

CF follows the 1MB = 1,000KB rule.

hi, seems that the detailed explaining by the above forumers hasn't been fully understood. in short, yes, it should be 488mb, or whatever, and not 512mb.

to make it easier to understand, let me put it another way, if i were to see 512mb on my camera with today's technology, i will be surprised.
