Funny. Its really out of point. But I have no where to yell out to, so I reckon clubsnap would be a good place having so many readers.

The toyota crown taxis are just pieces of terrible transportation vehicle. For those who know a little about cars should agree completely. Here's why I feel so.

1) The suspension is way underdamped. Even the newer unblown dampers are still extremely bouncy. Add this together with their springy seats, its just pogo stick ride. The suspension bottoms out on almost every undulation and it'll hit the end of its travel with a huge thunk. I dont think I ever felt its bump stops. They are non existant.

2) The diesel is just so old school. I think the newer Toyota Vans have better engines. But no doubt they run forever. The engines are torquey, but... extremely noisy and gruff.

Thank god...... the newer breed of taxis are excellent. Sometimes I wish I could buy them as personal cars. The newer sonatas, camrys, E class, Skodas, VWs all have new age turbo diesels that will out run most regular family saloons without a sweat. The skoda will do 0-100 in under 9 seconds, 60-120 probably quicker than a celica, camry, legacy. Their suspension are well damped and the seats pack quite a bit of support.

Since I'm at this topic... some bad habits I notice from taxi drivers.
1) Completely disregard the use of 1st gear, sometimes 2nd gear, and often 5th gear also. They seem to be able to drive through 0 - 100kph on 3rd and 4th gear, through excessive half clutching.
2) Not slowing down at speed bumps (fine , if I'm in the hurry).
3) Exercising their right feet by pumping the accelerator on even on straight roads. Accelerate , release, accelerate , release....

Sometimes I wished I took the bus. Wanna puke man.

You should see how they drive those Mercedes Benz Taxi, especially when they are 120km on fast lane and high beam on...
u should also see those turtle style Merc C,E,S class on the 1st lane driving at 70km/hr and when u beam them they beh song and go slower, then u overtake them they wanna crash into u...

i got no respect for anyone behind a merc...

Same sentiments.

Actually it is the driver not the car, but the number of bad Merc drivers seem to be on the high side in my opinion....:sticktong

Replace the entire fleet? I dunno. If they do that, I think we can look forward to more fare increases.

Actually, I kinda like the crown taxi. Its big and spacious.;p

enough on stereotyping merc drivers.. there are jus as many bad vios, lancers, impreza, civic, bmw, lexus..... (the list goes on) drivers out there

as for diesel cars.. those fellows @ NEA... god knows what they are thinking, when studies have shown petrol passenger cars can be as bad if not worse in contributing to environmental pollution then diesel ones..

marc, perhaps the taxi companies may wanna shed some light.. raise the fares but no improvements to taxi comfort level, telephone booking system and customer service (especially the areas where one is practically forced to make a booking before a cab magically appears within mins..)

I think the Silver arrows are the best out there now. I don't think they deserve name associated with racing heritage though. The driver was doing 100km/h and I could have sworn it felt more like 60km/h if I didn't see the speedo. It was that great and stable. Definitely a notch up from the E classes, petrol or diesel.

I think the silver arrows looks like the way to go. Great ride and  suspension. Merc cabbies just push their machines a bit too hard :D

i've sat in a silver arrow and the driver was gunning his engine like there's no tomorrow..even on normal roads...

oh well, he might be one of the minority erratic drivers..

I dont really mind Merc or Skoda cabbies gunning their turbo diesels, especially when I'm in the hurry, so long as they drive relatively safe. I'm a petrol head(diesel head too), and it feels damn good when these things take off seamlessly (read ... fantastic transmissions). In fact, I save more on cab fare in fast Mercs and Skodas. But a Crown being gunned, is a nono, that one I rather walk.

Usually when I take a Crown from Toa Payoh to Serangoon... its $5.50, sometimes $6.00. Once a mad Merc cab got me home at $4.40 .

Its damn stupid why the government doesnt bring in diesel cars. They are more efficient than petrol cars these days. More than 50% of european cars are diesel after much technological improvement. Diesel cars have better power than petrol engines, and mountains more torque.

I think the low diesel prices (low taxes) might explain why non-commercial vehicles cant be diesel. strangely though, I saw the latest Audi SUV in 3.0TDI at a shop in Ubi. Got number plate somemore.
