Well.. infrastructure is expensive. The new expressway cost $800k per meter. And honestly, enthusiasm died down quickly.
What those people need is long term commitment to help. People think throwing money can get instant result...
it was reported that gov is siphoning $ that has been budgeted to build better accommodation for these people, for some "other" uses.
And with better [and stronger houses] the casualty number might not hv been so high.
And in the end, $ seems to be come from outside the country, rather than from within, as a form of donation, to help these people.
Does this sound a bit weird?

Firstly, you are muddling a few separate issues altogether. In Indonesia, the houses are not provided and built by government.
A typical property is a landed house built by their own money by hiring other people/neighbours/etc, so if they scrimp, its their own doing.
No contractor, professional builder, etc involved.
Yes there will be some amount that will be corrupted, there's no way to avoid it. But the total sum are too little to rebuild everything as they were anyway.
Have you seen New Orleans today? Not much can be said either.. and this is in the US, the richest (or most indebted, take your pick) country in the world.

You can't expect their government to build public housing that can protect the people from all kind of disasters like typhoon, earth quake and tsunami.
Even if they did manage to build such public housing, it will be so expensive that ordinary people need to sell their kidney to buy one. :bsmilie:

I am saying that at least won't die so many.
And i read that they actually siphon away the $ that is meant to improve the housing. This is the most annoying part.
Housing that can protect you from earth quake will not protect you from typhoon and tsunami.
The only way to reduce the number of dead is to get out of the way of the typhoon and tsunami.
They are warned about the typhoon and have enough time to run but they didn't make use of the opportunity.
