Superzoom specialist Tamron has today announced the development of its most ambitious lens yet, the characteristically snappily-titled AF 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Macro. Designed exclusively for digital SLRs with APS-C sensors, this optic offers a 35mm-equivalent range of 28-419mm, perfect for owners of megazoom compacts looking to upgrade to an SLR, and incorporates the company's 'Vibration Control' optical image stabilisation system. To achieve the spectacular zoom range (billed as the longest in the world),Tamron has used all its design nous, including the use of aspheric elements and low dispersion glass to keep chromatic aberration under control.

Since it would be too huge, they have decided to make the 10-500 f/1.4 as a collection of 490 prime lenses (10,11,12,......,499,500), thus the need for the shopping trolley and assistants :D

Glad to see that they implement VC on it. Wonder what would be the retail price...drooling.

with the added is you bet your ass it is!

Same, expect CA and distortions to be through the roof.

Wonder how much it'll cost. Can get this to be my holiday lens

Actually the Tamron 18-250 is a pretty decent lens, better than some 18-55 kit lenses in the same range. If optically this new 18-270 will be as good as the 18-250 plus VC, I think it'd have some buyers.

Just wonder how it'd work on a Sony or Pentax cam since there is 'VC' built-in body already. Double VC would be really cool :D

The test report at Photozone.de
As some have already expected: there are some drawbacks and side effects of the huge zoom range.
What surprises me is the data of the distortion chart: Taken 9 June 2007??

very nice!!!!

The Photozone.de report address the 18-250mm unit though; hopefully this new 18-270mm lens will address some of the issues reported there.:)

too bad it indicates that not for use on full frame cameras.. otherwise will be good budget option for new D700 users
