These 2 lenses have different focal length, it depends on whether you want to have a wider angle view and what type of body you are using it with. The Sigma is only suitable for APS-C size sensor while you can use the Tamron for full frame camera. But the Sigma allows you to go wider on APS-C size camera.

I bought the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, for the constant 2.8 aperture and the ability to use with my film body. I have another ultra wide zoom to cover the wide angle view. You may prefer to have Sigma for the larger range of focal length. Both lenses are quite good for their price.

no brainer to me.. tamron - if u get a good copy, its fantastic IQ.. and F2.8 all the way.

if i need something wide i.e. 17mm-28mm.. i can always use kit lens.

To me is a question of,

need a fast lens? or a wide lens?

If wide(landscape) I won't need fast lens.

depends on wat u r shooting?
at 28-75 if u shoot alot of indoor with little light, then this is the lens.

Else 17-70 is good enuff for most needs, plus help with an external flash whenever you need to shoot indoor.

For me, I like to shoot landscape, 17-70 will be the one I will be going for.
