Messerschmits and the german planes are successful combat aircraft of their time too.

If I recall correctly, Singapore was defended by planes from the WWI era.

Lightning was a late WWII plane, mostly for interception and bomber escort. twin propeller plane with twin fuselage as well, one of the more unique designs during WWII.

if I recall correctly, Lightning was a ramjet fighter that was mad postwar or near the end of the war.

What you are referring to is the BAe Lightning of the RAF I don't think it was ever used in combat and its not a ramjet.

Not dat successful in combat bit but mi fav aircraft is still the F-14 Tomcat... first product to take over the ageing Plantom but it prove too advance for its time & $ intensive to maintain... The F-18 at half the price to maintain soon took over as the US downsize the F-14 squatron after a series of crashes.

Sad to c it fade away... will always remember the movie Tom Gun, the jap cartoon Macross....

But figurely speaking the most sucessful production fighter ever made in term of kill ratio and live to go back to base is F6F HELL CAT. With a kill total in second world war of 5000+ aircrafts or a kill ratio of 19 to 1 lost. There even a F6F Hellcat fly back to it's carrier with 200 new bullet holes :bigeyes: in it!!

the A10 Warthog was previously known as the Thunderbolt if i'm not mistaken. according to some journals, the A10 is considered one of the ugliest aircraft around. but its firepower is awesome!

You are correct.
Not that ugly lah...in fact cockpit is constructed in titantium body. Indeed awesome firepower.

The war ended when P-38 Lightning was introduced.

Singapore was defended by some British fighter plane called "Buffalo".
No wonder got shot to pieces by Jap Zeros.

Cant really remember whether did Charlton Heston flew a plane in Battle of Midway. Most of his roles were mainly senior officers or commanding officers of the unit or something

That has little to do with the quality of the planes or pilots. During that part of WW2, there is no reasonable defence against air attack. Japan was spotted earlier and became a sitting duck.

While that is a good plane, those figures didn't came about mainly because of quality.
The numerical and radar advantage accounted for a huge part of the figures.

A total 12275 hell cats were made. In many battles the US have more fighter planes than the enemy has planes!!
