Storing CDs of photos?

Hi,

My photo CDs are starting to pile up and was wondering if there are any special precautions we have to take when storing the CDs themselves for them to last a long period of time?

Should the CDs be kept in an airtight box, a dry cabinet, etc etc?

Are CDs prone to mold, or any other sort of deterioration brought about by humidity?

how about saving into dvd in the near future.


My music CD, can see the silver been 'eaten away' after one year of play, heavy usage too. Me want to store and been thinking of getting a burner but afraid that cd, once scretch afraid that some info will be affected.

Que Lynn - I am also starting to transfer photos onto CDRs. Don't mind me not answer your qns but asking more qns ....

I've read somewhere that people actually re-archive copies of their CDRs after some period of time, just to make sure that they don't lost their data (photos) ... so, how long will CDRs last? Is this re-archiving necessary?

Hi,

Well, there are a few ways for image storing.

(1) You may invest in 80GB harddisk to store your images and have another 80GB as backup harddisk.
(2) Storage in CD ROM. Suggest you use Mitsui or KOdak CD-ROM.
(3) Have them converted into Kodak Photo CD (68424001 -- look for Irene) and have them stored in Kodak Photo CD which can last 100 years.
(4) Burn at least 2 copies of each CD.

Er, dont mind me adding some important facts i read in the Straits Times few months back...A Japanese guy(some sort of manufacturer or specialist cant remember) said that a CD; no mention about whether it is original CDs u buy or CDr that u burn, can last up till a maximum of 20 years...

The chemicals that protect the CD itself will then have started to cause the CD to 'self-destruct', making it unreadable.

does heavy reading/playing from CD cause scratches ? How different then, is a cd that can last 100 years when a scratch will also render it unreadable.. same as a cheapo CDR..

Wow, it's a good thing this thread was resurrected, otherwise i would never have seen the other replies!

Anyway... are Kodak Photo CDs really that good??

PhotoCD is nothing special. Kodak makes the exact same 100 years claim for their gold CD-Rs. And printer manufacturers claim 25 years lightfastness for printouts etc etc....

anyone knows where to get those mini cds that's only as large as a coaster ? about slightly bigger than minidisc size...

I've seen them on the ground floor shop at the building where I got the Rayovac Charger but it's just a vendor. I think i could use it as a form of negative.. meaning i can slip into the photo album and it belongs to the album.. instead for sourcing around for the entire archive for the photos each time you need a reprint..

but i've never seen this small discs in SimLim before.. anyone knows how reliable they are and where to get them?

It's available at sls. They even have credit-card shaped and heart shaped CDRs.

such funny shapes ?? but ultimately they still spin in a circle right ? so only the complete concentric circles get to store imformation.. hmm... i dun think its alot considering the funny shapes..

Put those wierd shaped CDRs into a slot-in CD-rom drive and you'll get a cup holder
