Hi all,

Just wondering if there's a storage device which allows one to download all RAW photos from camera directly? and later upload to computer for edit etc?

thing is i am wondering how to store my photos whilst on holiday short of bringing a laptop or 10 x 64GB SD card.

hope some pros can share their experience here.

Thanks!

10x 64GB card not enough? Are you gunning down each hog and tree and native citizen in RAW? keep in mind you'll need to process all of them. be more selective and a handful of cards should be more than enough. Hard disks have mechanical parts, they don't like bumps. Cards will even survive a bath in sea water.

Good evening, fibredrive.
I use the Colorspace Hyperdrive 500Gb as my portable storage device.
It is really good and handy for downloading all my photos on the go and I bring it with me for all my trips.
More than enough to store many days of photos with as high as 1000 RAW photos a day.
Never failed me.
Bought from Memory World 5th floor Funan the IT mall.

i use a nexto portable harddisk. pretty hardy. my last nz trip i hooked a portable harddisk with my laptop

A specialised storage device will cost about the same as a netbook but wouldn't have the other benefits of surfing, emails on the go.

Hardly. :nono: Generally netbooks only have 200+ Gb storage in the range of $400+.
With that you can have 500Gb of portable media backup in a more compact size. Although you might not need that much space anyway :bsmilie:

Daoyin, yes certainly. You have raised good points there.
The extra benefits as listed by you is really that added value.
I totally agree with you on that.

Just that I like the Colorspace Hyperdrive for the following reasons:
  • Convenience - I just slot in my CF and SD cards at the side slots and it will download automatically.
  • It is hardy. Really hardy. And the charge really lasts long. One full charge can last me a good one and a half week.
Granted, one does not use the Colorspace Hyperdrive like one would use a Netbook (e.g. surfing the net, email etc. etc..)
  • Data Recovery. It has built-in Data Recovery function and It can do recovery of loss data and corrupted CF cards. I had first-hand experience of this.
For some strange reason, my usually trusty Sandisk CF card c*ck-ed up on me on my last trip. I simply slot it into the Hyperdrive and in about one hours time, all the precious photos for that day were recovered completely, together with photos taken long long time ago and the images still retained in the CF card although they were deleted.
This single funcion gave me a certain degree of reassurance.
It's not that expensive. The enclosure is about $200+. The HDD will be around $100+ depending on the storage capacity.
Nowadays HDD price has also dropped.

Hello, hanzohattori.
I have to concur with you that a Netbook's internal storage is around 160Gb or slightly more.
But agreeably, one does not use so much memory. Not usually.
For us, as we shoot RAW on our FF and cropped cameras, and as both myself and my wife carry 6 cameras every day out on our trips, we usually come back with easily 30Gb worth of RAW photos per day. (Let's just not digress on the amount of photo we shoot.)
Thus a 10 day trip would certainly see a storage space of 500Gb an almost necessity.

An experienced photographer like Daoyin would have his reasons for wanting to carry a Netbook instead of a Portable Storage Device.
It's all shooting style. And to each his own, hanzohattori, to each his own.

Hmm... This Hyperdrive looks interesting, especially since you can view your images on it... It's small, and does not take up so much space as the netbook.

Yes, while netbook allows you to surf or email, but that's not my worry as it may be expensive at some places to get broadband access, or some places does not even have any broadband access anyway (yes there are still such places around, rare but still a possibility, then the Hyperdrive will be a better bet.

I remember the days where you can only load the images into the HDD, but never had the chance to view them (and to ensure it's copied correctly!). Now you got me somewhat interested in this product... Dang... Where can I squeeze the cash... Hmm....

I make a good Hyperdrive salesman, don't I?
Sigh... don't own any shares in that company leh... kekeke...

Hmm I still find buying a cheap net book for 399 plus 100 bucks for a 500gb storage is more economical . 499 just nice lol

But didn't know the hyperdrive price came down that much also Liao haha

hey thanks all for the wonderful suggestions and rather enlightening debates on the pros and cons of hyperdrive (straight out of the Millenium Falcon i'm sure) and netbooks. thousand apologies for not having replied any sooner.
will look into it and see if it's worth it! cheers

hi all. looking for a form of storage to bring it with me for my year end trip. but I do not wish to bring my macbook. and the hyperdrive is rather expensive, as I'm a student. any other alternatives? like a hard drive that can connect to the camera and just transfer it over.

Any hard drive needs power and some 'brain' to read / write data. Also, being mechanical devices they are sensitive towards shocks and vibrations. Other options:
a) Get more memory cards, they are cheap.
b) Check for Internet cafes that offer CD writing services. (Do check all your media thoroughly for viruses upon returning!)

Yes, as mentioned liao... look at the media storage devices available in the market. One store is Eastgear. :)

just curious... we all know that HDDs are mechanical drives... it has a lot of moving parts in it. Why would one store their precious images into a mechanical drive when you can stock loads of CF/SDs to get the same capacity?

Say 320GB 2.5" HDD... that equals to 10x 32GB media cards, or 5x 64GB cards... yet media cards have higher reliability than mechanical drives. And they are not as heavy as a mechanical drive too!

You would use the external hdd as a backup for the media cards. For insurance in the field.

That nexo device is 320GB at $280, 320Gb worth of decently realiable cards would cost way beyond that. And you usually leave the backup device in the room and do the back ups at night? Less banging around in the bag, less likely to fail i guess.

Don't you store your pics in a HDD anyway?

as for portable versions, they are pretty decent in reliability. As long as you don't drop them or subject them to hard shock, they should be able to last well. And the recent SSD's aren't that reliable anyway...
