New technology that can make tanks invisible has been unveiled by the Ministry of Defence.

In secret trials last week, the Army said it had made a vehicle completely disappear and predicted that an invisible tank would be ready for service by 2012.

The new technology uses cameras and projectors to beam images of the surrounding landscape onto a tank.

Now you see it: How the tank might look with background images beamed onto the side

The result is that anyone looking in the direction of the vehicle only sees what is beyond it and not the tank itself.

A soldier, who was at the trials, said: "This technology is incredible. If I hadn't been present I wouldn't have believed it. I looked across the fields and just saw grass and trees - but in reality I was staring down the barrel of a tank gun."

How the technology works in a combat situation is very sensitive, but the MoD is believed to be testing a military jacket that works on the same principles.

It is the type of innovation normally associated with James Bond, and the brains behind the latest technology is the MoD's very own "Q" - Professor Sir John Pendry, of Imperial College London.

He said the only drawback was the reliability of the cameras and projectors.

But he added: "The next stage is to make the tank invisible without them - which is intricate and complicated, but possible."

Pretty cool eh? ;)

so next time the soldiers themselves will have problems finding their own tanks in case of an attack. The enemy cannot see our tanks... We can't see our own tanks too. ;)

Another Blue on Blue ...

This technology will improve in time to come as more sophisticated multiple unit tracking systems get introduced to warfare. Current operational tracking systems aren't effective enough compared to those in development.. ;p

LOL. Something popped into my head...

Command Center: All units! We are under attack! Scramble the Stealth Tanks and destroy all enemy tanks!

Field Command: Roger that Command Center....

An hour later...

Command Center: Field command! This is Command Center! what haven't you guys deploy our latest Stealth Tank yet? The enemy is closing in on us!

Field Command: Command Center... this is Field Command. We have a problem! We have been trying to locate the Stealth Tank. But we cannot find them anywhere!

Well, what follows the EMP pulse will mean everyone's dead too :bsmilie:
not necessarily depends on what sets it off. You don't need a nuke to generate an emp. though i have to say the people who came up with this are definitely fans of C&C haha

I prefer the chrono-prism-tank :bsmilie:

This bit of technology looks promising but the imagine the image sensors suffering from ccd failure. You will see a piece of camouflaged metal floating the air moving at 50-60km/h on rough terrain (Assuming it's a MBT!) :bsmilie:

The Cold War II has just started... those politicians in Europe who campaigned for defence cutbacks must be shitting in their pants right now with Putin sending his bombers on Cold War Deterrent patrols again...
