Here are the links for DOF calculations for those who are interested in some serious stuff :)

http://www.olympus-pro.com/index.eu.en.html?content=/eu/en/downloads/depthoffieldcalculator.html
http://www.trenholm.org/hmmerk/DOFR.html
http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/guides/dof/hyperfocal1.html

can the moderator make this thread sticky so that people can add more essential links :)

cheers
 but the oly E1 DOF calculator abit chim, trying to understand how to use it.

prehaps chancy would like to explain?

Other tools in the package such as the

- flash range chart
- colour temp chart
- aperture/time convertor
are pretty useful too.

Hello Chii & Bariq,

Actually I submitted the Oly DOF calculator link sometime ago but looks like the whole world missed it :-(

Can't provide insights as the calculators work only on Palm and PocketPC PDAs which I have neither.

But here's what the product essentially does (I think),

1. Calculates & depth of field for a given focal length (in 4/3), aperture & subject focus distance. Of course one can use the DOP preview to visualise the DOF effect.

2) Calculates the hyperfocal distance to maximise depth of field effects from near point to infinity for a given aperture.

Plus others ...

Is relevant to landscape & candid photographer (using rangefinders). In both instance, the photographer can select what distance to pre-focus at after deciding where (in metres) he wants depth of field to start from so that subject detail is captured even when away from plane of focus.

In landscape photography, knowing the hyperfocal distance allows the photographer obtain the greatest depth of field using the smallest aperture possible but not any smaller due to diffraction effects or shutter speed concerns.

Older manual focus lenses have scribed DOF marks on the lens as an aid but this has disappeared from AF lenses, hence this DOF calculator.

Unless of course, you have the Konica Minolta Dynax 7 series of camera which calculates & shows the DOF pictorially from their large rear LCD panel. A most useful built-in aid.

Hope this clarifies.

Cheers,
