Took some at Fullerton with my trusty ballpod. This is my first time at scenic shots so it may not be good.

3 shots of the soon to be moved guy at different settings

For the first set of pics:

1. Nice shot! Good exposure and composition.
2. Over-exposed
3. Nice shot and composition (but there seems to be a fair bit of noise in the pic)

As for the second set, no comment coz the pics have gone missing.

Thanx for the comments. Actually, most of the night shots all had quite a bit of noise in them. I ran hotpixel over them and they look a lot better now. Is this usually the case? I think i magnified the hot pixel problem by using the 6MP interpolated mode.

yep, 1st and 3rd shots are good, 2nd one is overexposed. The composition for the 1st shot is very apt too, I find it hard to shoot Fullerton Hotel at a good angle. You handled it pretty well.

I think one problem you can't help with is the trees...they are kinda distracting.

btw, does the 601z have any noise-reduction algorithm inbuilt?

If u were there that nite, u probably, like a lot of tourists, see one madman running ard from benches to trashcans to lightboxes looking for the best fengshui for the camera. :embrass: This one was taken using the ballpod on top of the lightbox.

I think noise reduction doesn't kick in until iso800. The pictures i took, especially the bug's eyes was quite noisy. Should have taken them in 3MP mode

Cant remember the settings cos i was fiddling with the manual controls to get the best display. Is there a proggie that will read the exif from the jpeg. I think most of my settings were 1-2s shutter priority, iso 200. Should i have tried shorter exposures with iso400?

There are many programs that can read EXIF info, but the best I found is Exif Reader. What so good about it is that it understands a lot of proprietary information that camera makers insert in the "Maker Notes" field. Other EXIF readers will just display the "Maker Notes" as a set of numbers.

hope you don't mind me doing a comparison of the picture colour. If so I will remove it.

I am also a beginner, no special skills. Just took it today, at almost the same spot I think, but at a later time around 10pm

Mine was taken ard 830. Did u try with the WB set to incandescent to compensate for the street lights?

The pic taken from S40 looks original.
F601's may seem artificial though...but it's really very nice.
Can F601 takes "original nite shoots" like S40?

Both are excellent cameras...hmm...should have bought F601 instead of olympus 2040...heh

actually for S40 to achieve that, you need to shoot at an earlier hour, say 7:30-45

and change the white balance to the apporpriate light condition
