I believe you just need to add a + in front.

Put the number in exactly as if you were going to call them, +44 {their number, possibly with leading 0 removed}

That said, international SMS is a bit of a hit and miss affair - you won't know if it arrived or not. Some carriers won't send SMS messages internationally for various reasons, some will send them, but only if you 'subscribe' to International SMS service, some carriers won't receive international SMS, etc, etc.

Too many variables and no indications of error.
