A while back, Singapore banned smoking in public areas, except for certain marked out smoking zones....

What do u guys think?

haha! last time also cannot keep long hair for guys. if you have long hair, you are seen as gangster.

coffee shops have the separate area for smokers, but it's a joke i would say..the smokers' area is still right next to the non-smoking zone, and cigarette smoke still gets blown in by the wind

Give the smokers a break lah.....

As a smoker, i challenge the guys in white to ban sale of ciggies in Singapore.

If they can do that, then i will quit smoking.

As what evenstar said, i find the yellow box a joke too. Just stop all these rubbish ban of smoking and ban the sale of ciggies totally lah.

Btw, if ciggies are banned, maybe GST will go up........:bsmilie:

Taxes from ciggies very very good income you know? ;)

I wouldn't want to start a war between smokers and non-smokers. It's a proven medical fact that 2nd-hand smoke causes cancer. If smokers want to smoke, why they can't smoke in other open space where there isn't anybody around and then return to coffee shops/bars/pubs to enjoy themselves? I think it's just selfishness at play.

actually, i really always wonder why people smoke despite knowing that it is unhealthy. it is like really enjoyable (that the satisfaction gained is worth the sacrifice) or is it really just to look cool (as what primary school textbooks teach) or was it caused by a mistake of taking the first puff (causing this chemical addiction which just cannot be shaken off)? any smokers here to explain why? i try to ask myself the advantages of smoking, but i still can't seem to read the minds of smokers. i definitely will be interested in hearing why smokers smoke.

do you know that 2nd hand smoke will harm the non smokers?
it will take maybe 40-50 years but it will harm them eventually

btw i am a smoker too

non smokers should all cycle and not use fossle fuels

do you know that CO - carbon monoxide will kill a person in minutes?

Non-smokers should just stay indoors! Leave the outdoors to smokers... It makes no differences sitting beside a smoking table! But the problem is... Are the non-smokers making noise in the 1st place or the government imagine it?

Look at cafes/coffeeshops with outdoor areas... Its always packed at the smoking area. Why? Cos non-smokers dine and have coffee indoors! Stupid...

You can choose to stay home when the haze is bad.. Why cant you give way to such small matter?

The problem is more on places where there is no indoors/outdoors - it's all open air, and they have smoking areas next to non-smoking areas.

worst part is that there are non smokers sitting on smoking tables
YES! Forgot to mention this in my reply. I really hate this! Already got limited smoking tables and non smokers still sit at smoking tables! Damn! I always get damn frustrated talking about this topic!

What are you trying to say? I don't really understand.

actually, i am abit blurred out too. so....can someone answer my post? why smoke in the first place? from a teen point of view, i do find it hard to understand why people smoke. enjoyment? addiction? appearance? but all doesn't seem to fit in one way or another. mind explaning why?

You can't have satay without smoke. :bsmilie:

Like Virgo, I'm not sure what you are trying to say here... Of course non-smokers are going to dine and have coffee indoors if there are smokers outdoors and they don't want the smoke. :dunno:

because the enjoyment is immediate, but the effects are not so obvious. we know it in our head, but it's not the same as feeling it there and then. human beings are like that one lah. it's the same reason why i can't give up fried chicken. (ok lah, at least eating fried chicken hurts no one else but the chicken ;p )

I have a few friends who started smoking due to normal factors like peer pressure and the 'cool' image I guess, over the years its just become and addiction and a way of socialising with them with 'smoke breaks'. While I have pretty much given up asking them to quit they also don't pressure me into starting the habit either.

It is annoying when non-smokers sit at smoking tables though. I f you don't want to smoke then why make it harder for the smokers? If you are trying to get them to quit by annoying them its not gonna work.

If you don't want second hand smoke then dont go near it. The points raised about how near the smoking and non-smoking sections are a re pretty valid though so i try to chose tables further away from the smoking area.
