SingTel "Gravely Disappointed" With MDA, StarHub Laughing Away

SingTel forced to cross-carry BPL matches with StarHub.

StarHub said:
...

We welcome the decision of the Media Development Authority (MDA) to make the Barclays Premier League subject to the cross-carriage measure.

Singapore viewers are the biggest beneficiaries of this decision and we are excited to be able to bring the BPL to our customers on our reliable network once again.

SingTel said it was "gravely disappointed" with the decision as it disadvantages both consumers and the industry.

Allen Lew, SingTel's country chief officer Singapore, said the company intends to appeal the decision and seek legal recourse if necessary.

He added that the development also means that soccer fans can expect to pay higher prices to watch matches in future.

If cross carry, who is going to sign up MioTV anymore?

Better sell some Singtel shares.

Will Singtel pull out of Singapore?
The market is too small for 2 players as the exclusive rights to broadcast BPL is very expensive. So if Singtel is going to be the sole broadcaster of BPL. Then they should do more such as bring 3D and true surround sound content. Watching football has to be as true to life experience.

At least let Starhub be able to broadcast Champions League and some heavy clashes in 2D on demand basis.

In the first place consumer is being held ransom by the telcos tussle for the copyright......I skipped 2 world cup live telecast not because I dont like soccer....but because I refuse to pay the extra fees.....and I am going to terminate my mio tv next mth because I find the extra I paid just for the epl is not justify.....the $50+ savings can better spend on something else man...

Nowadays who will still watch soccer like last time? All outside party, work or sleep. Want to know results, go online and know liao, no need to wait till next day paper. 110 mins of life wasted by just watching a match that dont concern me much, I doubt I will watch even free. (unless LFC playing. :p)
