Singapore's airport closes for 1 hr as F16 jets intercept plane
2008-01-22 21:07 (New York)

SINGAPORE, Jan. 23 Kyodo

Two Singapore air force fighters intercepted a small civilian aircraft that intruded into the city-state's airspace late Tuesday, forcing Changi Airport to close for nearly an hour, officials said Wednesday.

The Cessna 208 aircraft ''was heading toward Singapore airspace without an approved flight plan,'' the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

In response, two F-16 ''fighters were scrambled to intercept (the) civilian aircraft'' at about 6.42 p.m. local time, escorting it to land at Changi Airport,'' it said.

The ministry determined it was ''not a terrorist threat.''

But the incident led to the airport being closed for almost an hour from 7 p.m., the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore said.

The temporary closure delayed two dozen incoming and outgoing flights, one of which had to be diverted to a small airport in neighboring Malaysia's southern state of Johor.
The Straits Times newspaper reported that the plane was flying in from the Thai resort island of Koh Samui.

Police are investigating the case.

hurray to our rsaf boys.

sheet... 2 F16s intercepting a small Cessna? kinda overkill i think... :bsmilie:

bet the Cessna's pilot must be peeing in his pants. i wonder how the jets maintained speed with the Cessna :dunno:

must be difficult at times to nose up and fly straight.

overkill? i don't think so. no one knows what's inside the cessna.

kekeke.. reminds me of that Simpson's epsiode where the pilots chased Bart & Crusty on foot since their fighters were too fast for the vintage plane. :bsmilie:

Lets see who are the pilots and passangers on that flight, could be Thai royal members, military chiefs or rich businessmen.

it is likely that their navigation equipment broke down.. so manually use eyes to see and fly.

nah, two jet is standard too, if one get shot down, the other one can call for help.

these planes are aerodymanicly not stable, its the computer inside that keep it flying, cause an unstable plane is easier to turn in a dogfight.

just wondering out loud how does the two jets force the 'intruder' plane into a certain course of action?

they box the intruder in... one on the left and right.

Don't think so bro. Better be safe than sorry...Don't play play with our flyboys. Good on them for keeping our skies safe.
