Singapore population to hit 6.9million by 2030

I think the govt should further develop the Marina Bay Sands area. They can construct vast underground complexes and move the vice from Geylang/Orchard Towers/Joo Chiat there. That way MBS will become a fully-stocked, one-stop mega complex for vice. This will free up the space occupied by the houses at Geylang for further redevelopment.

Woooww.... All in!!!!!

Easier for everyone!!!! But Geylang is also an Icon of Singapore liao..........

No use complaining lah. To be debated and approved in Parliament on Monday. Once democratically approved, full steam ahead. Let's see how supportive the First World Parliament opposition will be.

Supportive or not, there's not much the First World opposition can do. Currently, they are still playing the football match with few players and their goalpost shifted nearer to the halfway line.

isn't he the chap who got a change of heart for something like $5? Cheep cheep ......... :bsmilie:

"change of heart". Which sounds like change of mind. Hope that he won't change his heart too often. Otherwise what he says now may not be what he implements later. LOL

Let's see if he has good heart. If not, the dogs can have it ....... :p

Housing prices and rent will skyrocket.
We need politicians who can see the problem and solve it.

Now someone clarified 6.9 is only the upper bound and is not a target.
6.5 is the lower bound.
Unless someone says that 6.5 is also not the target.

Then we do not know what is target or whether there is any target.

If much money and resources are to be spent to prepare infrastructure to meet the needs of 6.5 or 6.9, then presumably 6.5 IS the target. That is only 0.4 below 6.9 but a big jump from current. So what is the usefulness of splitting hairs between 6.5 and 6.9.

The point detractors raise is not which figure 6.5 or 6.9 is the target.

The point is whether fundamental assumptions upon which these forecasts are made; and whether Singapore is able to accommodate, are wrong.

I created a similar thread with a direct link to the white paper just soon after it was released a couple of days ago.

Commented that LKY should slap LSL in the face ("two tight slaps") to wake his ideas up since LKY himself said on the mainstream media in 2008 that 5 million is more that enough, it must have triggered an automated response to the administrators and moderators 'cos the thread got deleted almost instantly. :bsmilie:

Threads are deleted when people report post and complain. So you know...

Should stock up on tele lenses instead. Can take pictures of your neighbour digging nose, scratching balls and shaving arm-pit hair. A new picture category - holed up human behaviour.

My Msian friends used to laugh at Singaporean for living in pigeon holes. I think they will soon start calling the space we live in termites nests.

Sure but they love to come to Singapore to stay.....

It is easy to say here....

So any solution?

Should we go back to 4 millions of even 3 or 2 millions so that we can enjoy the space and perhaps stay in kampong where we can have the service of 36 doors truck?

There is a event setup on Facebook.

The White paper on population growth has caused great anxiety amongst Singaporeans. They are concerned that as Singaporeans will make up only 55% of the total population in 2030, what will the country become? Easily the balance can tip us to become minorities in our own country.
Singaporeans are currently trying to cope with the daily overcrowding of trains and buses, higher health costs, competitions for homes and jobs etc. The various measures just released before the by-election have yet to be felt.
Thus this package of population change has caught them off guard. The back log of infrastructure should have been addressed and made right first. Such a move would have instilled confidence.
What is worrying is when PM admitted the govt. did not have 20/20 foresight over the last influx of immigrants to explain the infrastructure lag. This have cast doubt on the previous planning
I quote ST Sat feb2 pg D5 (Jessica Cheam) “In 2007 , when Singapore’s population was 4.6 m….URA revised its planning parameters …………based on – to 6.5m , up from a 2001 projection of 5.5m “ unquote. How then did our infrastructures of housing, transport ie road and rail, social and health amenities be so woefully short when 2001 forecast was already 5.5m? This is worrying as the govt has total control over immigration?
PM has assured that this time round the planners will create a greater buffer in its planning. Be that as it may, the projection of 6.9m is overwhelming and should be thoroughly debated.
Most, if not all people, seek a comfortable space for their family. We do not want to risk driving away our own.

They would love to do this unfortunately the reclaimed land there is marine clay and unsuitable for too much underground or even above ground building.

Why do you think they left the land to "sit" for 20yrs after reclaiming?

The pockets of land they plan to reclaim now for the population growth in 2030 won't be "sitting" for any much longer ........

We need a government with heart and love...

We need a people that is not greedy, be grateful for what they are given, don't complain, accept new immigrants, produce lots of babies, and work hard.
