Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 for my 7D.

I want to know if Sigma - 70-200 F2.8 EX APO IF is the same as Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX APO IF HSM? Because I can't seem to be able to find a version without HSM.

Any help is greatly appreciated! ;)

Hi LOMO,
Think HSM is the silent drive motor system for the lens, similar to Canon's USM.

For Minolta/Alpha mount there is no HSM.

There are few version of this lens, the EX APO, the EX APO DG and the newest EX APO DG MACRO.

The difference between the DG and non-DG is the lens coating to reduce sensor reflection. The MACRO version has shorter minimum focus distance. Have used the EX APO, great value, fast focus and usable at 2.8 as well.

Someone is selling this lens (can't remember which version) in B&S.

No HSM for Minolta mount? But how come some review sites featured the lens with 'HSM' on it? It's misleading leh...

Does the DG and non-DG make a lot of difference? How much did u pay for it?

DewaKarma is selling the non-DG version. He's selling Sigma - 70-200 F2.8 EX APO IF.

HSM is only for Nikon and Canon mount.

Does the DG coating make a difference ? No idea cause never used the equivalent DG version and do a side by side comparison. Was very happy with it when I have it until the Minolta.... New one was selling at around $1400 at that time. The latest MACRO version is priced higher if I'm not wrong.

Some photos from my previous Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX version.

The new one with Marco version hovers betw. $1550-$1650.

The pics are nice! Very sharp! Any PP for these pics?

In a not so green world!! :(
Hi Lomo,
If you can wait for a few more(dunno weeks or months!)....then Tamron have launched their 70-200mm 2.8 too in the USA....soon to rollout & hit Singapore shores too. Seems like quite a solid buy from their website press release. Got a thread on this 70-200 lenses(Tamron, Sigma & the expensive legendary Nikon one) too in one of my posts if you care to take a look.

No reviews on the Tamron one thoguh...seems quite rare even after launch in USA in March this year. price wise will be similar to Sigma I think, maybe slightly more but it's the latest with some good features and their 17-50 2.8 is already quite a class act....so am anticipating this to be good too.

On the sigma...i think HSM is good to have...go for it if you can get one with HSM (assuming you're still made up your mind about Sigma though even after hearing of the Tamron...hehehe!). DG or non DG...hmmmm...mixed reactions from many i've asked...so i would say it's kinda of a neutral feature...great if you have it and good if you dont too.

Cheers mate! :)

Thanks for the introduction!

I guess this is the one:
http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/tamron_70-200_28.html

The look of it very 'manual' leh, Sigma has a edge over the design aspect.

I would definitely prefer a lens with HSM. But you know la, when such thoughts come to mind, hands damn itchy to get one. Moreover budget tight, I just need one that fits my needs.

I'm not that particular about DG or no DG, after tankm posted his pictures, I'm very impressed with the result. I might jz need to try on the lens and have a feel of it. ;)

:bsmilie: its a good lens... very versatile and a must-have especially if you shoot indoor performances and/or sports .. a good alternative to the much more expensive KM or Sony version.

some of my humble shots all taken with the sigma 70-200 f2.8 APO non DG non Macro.

i have the sigma 70-200 apo ex dg (no macro).. can't tell you the differences between the dg and non-dg versions cuz i've nv tried the non-dg version, but well.. i love the one i have ;) it's a little soft at f2.8 (but still very useable), but once u stop it down to f4.. nice and sharp.. the focusing speed is pretty alright as well.. fast enough for me to take s-league games at night..

some shots with my 5D and the sigma (some PP done)..

No sharpening done. For first picture, just minor level adjustment. Second picture, some lifting of shadow.

HSM is only for Nikon and Canon mount.

I never had fond impression of Tamron, Sigma is my preferred choice. Moreover the new Tamrom lens doesn't look nice...very old-fashioned and manual-like.

For the 70-200 you have, since it doesn't have HSM, is it noisy when zooming?
