I've used the 150-500mm on my d7000 which has the same pixel pitches the d800. The photos are quite good as long as you shoot f/8 or lower and don't have any filters on it.

The 80-400mm needs to be stopped down to f/8 to f/10 for best results,

It's AF is quite a bottleneck and tested it for Football and Birds. Under challenging light conditions like Football matches in a stadium at night, the AF cannot catch up (Note: Because of the nature of the sport, shutter speeds are extremely fast to freeze the motion and hence photographing at f/5.6 at the long end with auto ISO 3200 to 6400 on the D800, the keep rate results are low due to the slow AF. AF Results are also unreliable af f/5.6 and personally, toally not usable at its optimum apreture of f/8 to f/10.) Likewise for fast Birds in flight.

Not trying to thrown in a spanner to your selection but you can consider the 300mm f/4 + TC14E-II for birding and wildlife.
