Sigma 100-300/4 or Pentax 60-250/4

Which would you buy?

The Sigma 100-300/4 has fairly good reviews, although it tends to have qc issues so getting a good copy is important. Costs about SGD 1.7k new. No weathersealing, supersonic focussing.

The Pentax 60-250/4 is quite new, but probably as good or better across the range. Costs probably SGD 1.9k new. Has weathersealing, supersonic focussing, but loses some range.

Given the 2, undoubtly 60~250 will be my choice over 100~300. The difference is alot between 60 vs 100 when capturing 'nearer' subject is concern while the 250 vs 300 makes very little or no difference for me.

If I'm getting something of the 100~300 range, I would like the Sigma 120~300/2.8 in my bag.

Yes dnaxe, that's what i thought too after checking Sigma's catalogue but when I saw one mounted on a K10 2 years ago in Malacca. I asked to see it from the hands of a Japanese & he's kind enough to de-mount it.

I mount it onto my K10... and the whole world stood still !!! Its actually available for PK mount after all...

This is my thought as well. Whenever I had my FA*80-200 attached, I was always looking for something below 80mm and above the 50mm of the DA*16-50. The DA*60-250 makes it work well.

I think if you have the cash, you can't go wrong with either lens. For me, I won't be upgrading my tele lens for a while. I'm pretty happy with my DA 55-300 F4-5.8, which cost much less.

I'd choose the DA*60-250 over the Sigma 100-300 for the same reason as Francis and Lance. 60mm vs 100mm is quite big difference. But 250mm vs 300mm the difference is pretty small. Plus the weathersealing, the SDM, and being a Pentax, no reason to choose Sigma 100-300/4 (except lower price). The other reason is that the Sigma 100-300 is quite a huge lens, much bigger and heavier then the DA*60-250:

Sigma 100-300/4 EX : 92.4D x 226.5L, 1440g, 82mm filter size
Pentax DA* 60-250/4: 82D x 167.5L, 1040g, 67mm filter size


BTW, DA*60-250/4 has been tested on full frame 35mm film camera, and it's been verified that the lens would cover full frame image circle w/o any problem So I guess Pentax is slowly moving their DA product lines into full frame compatible ones, but they wouldn't say so for some reason. Maybe another surprise next year

seems that the sigma 100-300 does not have HSM on the pentax mount according to the Sigma website. For this reason alone, i wouldn't pay the same $$$ as the other mounts to get the 100-300 F4 if i was on pentax.
