Should I upgrade from EFS 17-85mm to EF 24-105mm L lens?

Is it good for me to ditch the 17-85mm for 24-105mm L for the longer focal length & better lens? And get the 10-22mm crop lens for the wide angle. Using a 7D, not going for full frame. Any advise?

You will end up losing the wide angle of 17-85. Bear in mind since you are not planning to upgrade to ff, your field of view for 24mm becomes 38mm whereas the 17mm is 27mm field of view.

So is it better to get 10-22mm for that wide angle, keep using the 17-85mm & saving $$$ by not getting the 24-105mm lens. The L is kind a factor for me to buy. i do have a cheap 75-300mm non USM lens that i can work with for telephoto

I used to have this combo (10-22 & 24-105) with 60D. The only problem I have is shoot indoor, 24mm on crop is abit tight. But I shoot outdoor 85%, so I can live with it.
How about you?

Sometimes i shoot indoors the 17-85mm is barely wide enough. I only have this 17-85mm & 75-300mm lens all these while. With the 24-105mm isn't really wide. I had the 350D bought many years ago, only got 7D recently. So i think for the 24-105mm only good if taking telephoto end on crop. So no need bring the lousy 75-300mm

Hmmm why not consider the 10-22 then, and pair with a 70-200 for the tele end?

Im using this combo now, 10-22 + 24-105...my 17-50 hardly touched since then

Tbh, when im outside, I never find the 24mm to be a problem...if I know im shooting something wider/bigger which 24mm cant capture, I would have change lens way before hand. For indoors, its a confirm 10-22 on your camera, and like what you said, sometimes even 17mm cant capture wide enough indoors

Anyway, have you consider 15-85? Its wider than your 17-85, slightly better optics, overall its cheaper and no need change lens as compared to 10-22+24-105 combo

I checked the specs for EF S 15-85mm vs EF S17-85mm. It seems that the EF S 17-85mm is a ring-type USM, but the 15-85mm is micro-USM

thus I had not considered 15-85mm

Hmmm, seem to me you like tele shot. Have you thought of 70-200 L or 75-300 L?
If your pocket can take it, go go go. But careful of BBB virus. Haha......

okay, so do you prefer shooting tele? or you find the 105mm will be sufficient enough for your tele needs?

if you like much longer focal length, get 70-200 f4l instead of 24-105
if 105mm is more than enough, can go ahead for the 24-105

anyone can tell me the difference in terms of the USM bet 17-85mm & 15-85mm? optics wise which is better. I search the canon buy/sell thread, alot ppl selling their 17-85mm.

ring usm in 17-85 is better in terms of speed, noise and there is full-time manual focusing as well

optics-wise, I believe is 15-85, i tried it before, and its really good

I think I can live with 17-85mm... no point buying 15-85mm if the focal length is abt the same

for wide angle, you can try tokina 11-16 as well, its faster than 10-22 but only lose out in range

if you are sticking with your 17-85, it makes a good complement

I survived 3-4 years on 24-105 on 50D
It depend on you not whether you want or not

I concur with G-man bro.

If I intend to stay with crop, I will NOT give up 17-85 for 24-105. Why? I kill myself on the wide end for a +20mm in focal length?

If you wish to get the 24-105L, do pair it with a EF-S 10-22mm though, you will need it since you are already facing problem at wide end at 17mm.

I used to own the EF-S 10-22 paired with EF 24-70L. Very good combo but make sure you are comfortable with changing lens when you need to go wider on the 24-70L.

Both shares same 77mm filter threads as well.

That's a VERY important bonus :D

perhaps I might consider the tokina 11-16mm to pair with my 17-85mm..... as for the telephoto zoom.. the 70-200 IS II USM f/2.8 seems expensive
