Should I get the Canon 1.4x Teleconverter?

Hi,

Recently I bought the Kenko 1.4x teleconverter for my 300mm f4L lens. I like the reach of this teleconverter. However I notice something really disturbing, when I was photographing some birds against bright background, I noticed very bad purple fringing on my subjects.

I am wondering if by changing to a Canon's 1.4x teleconverter would actually reduce this problem?

Have you try renting a Canon 1.4tx to test out? might help you to conclude this possible while using your Kenko. When I pair up the Canon 1.4 tx on my 70-200 it seems all right too me. in my case would be a different lens compare to you.

AFAIK, kenko 1.4X works well. Many Birders using it. Canon's 1.4X have a protruding front element so not all lenses are suitable to use.

Attached is a reduced size photo I took,

It is a reduced resolution photo on my fb account. But even then you can noticed some very disturbing fringing on it. I will post more photo when I have reach home (left my harddisk at home).

Because I read the review, everyone was saying that Kenko x1.4 teleconverter has almost the same sharpness as the canon's one. And my 300mm f4L is the non-IS one (very old one) that I bought second hand from BnS section, so not really that costly.

Yeah. I think I'll do that.
