After the news was "mis-spun" by "mischievous hands" and got out, was there any panic in the street - despite cracked trains still in service?

You may not be aware that all the trains in entire Japan shinkansen train systems run on a single track in one direction. All the trains travel at about the same speed. Depending on the a train station stops frequency, the following train with less station stops on the track will overtake the "stop" train at a scheduled station.
This operation require well planned schedule and co-ordination. Any mess-up, up to 32 train carriages will be involved.
Some examples of bullet runs from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka within a window of only 30 minutes (extracted from schedule booklet):
You'll notice that the Nozomi (departing last) overtake the other Hikari & Kodama trains along the way;
And the Hikari train will overtake the slower Kodama... and, mind you, all these trains run on the same track in the same direction
From 0656hr to 0730hr 10 bullet trains will leave Tokyo for Shin-Osaka. One run every 3.4 minutes

The key words are "preventive maintenance". And something that seem to be very alien to many here in SG: the pride in a job well done.
Exactly. Do note that the bullet trains run at high speed with time spacing of around 3-5 minutes between trains.
Then almost always "cheaper" takes priority. So if you insist, then "cheaper, better" or "cheaper, faster". Only when it comes to pay of ministers then "cheaper" is off the table.
That's the main flaw in thinking, in my opinion, if 'cheaper' takes priority or is even considered equal to 'better'.

Given how much spin there is going on, I think the best thing to do is to just sit on the sidelines and not get too involved. Life is too short...
