hi all, seeking opinion on this.

i'm going backpacking in 2 months for slightly more than a month. usually my gf and i watch DVDs on a portable player to kill time when we are traveling from place to place.

this time i'm thinking of getting a netbook (cheap one probably) to travel instead of bringing a DVD player and many DVDs around..

but of course it involves bringing portable storage and spending money and all that.. so what do you all think of the following options?

option 1. bring portable DVD player + DVDs...

I will be bringing portable storage, but because it's an old 80gb storage system that does not take SATA drives, so i probably have to bring an extra old IDE harddrive to swap around with it when one drive fills up. it's a nexto that has no image viewing capabilities. cost of this is option is $0.

option 2. buy a cheap netbook (~$400-$600)

buy netbook and bring portable 80gb harddrive, so can view pictures, watch movies, surf net, and still have portable storage to boot. cost of this option is cost of netbook, which is $400-$600.

but this cost can be hedged against by selling it after the trip, or i can just sell an old existing laptop that's lying around unused and keep the netbook (and i can even sell the DVD player). so potentially the cost can be minimized to maybe $100 or so.

the dvd player+dvds probably weigh as much as the netbook does... so weight is negligible.

of course there's always an option 3... just bring portable storage and live with it........
haha.

my concern with 3 is that i cannot view any photos!

but okay.. anybody got opinions on this? may help in convincing my gf (who's against spending money and chooses either option 1 or 3) or of course, in convincing me that option 2 is really a waste of money... haha.

thanks in advance!

A net book, is quite a good investment. Allows you to surf the net and keep in touch with everyone. As well, as it can take along a portable hard drive for viewing videos and images.

But do note, that when you play a video from your portable hard drive, the battery life of the net book will decrease faster.

My suggestion is that you buy a decent net book. Maybe a Asus, 901H or the HP mini. Get a portable Hard drive maybe about 250gb would be enough, depending on your videos. Get a couple of 4GB thumbdrives. Store the videos that you want to watch during travelling on the thumbdrives, as thumb drives use less power than a hard disk.

Then you may ask, what's the point of the harddisk? The hard disk is useful for you to store other videos and maybe your photographs as well. Take the videos you would want to watch from the hard disk, put them into the thumb drives and watch them. Alternatively, if the net book has its own storage big enough to view a movie, then the thumbdrives would not be needed. Just store them onto your net book's storage.

Most important factor you need to look for, is the net book's battery life. Also be wary of salesmen who claim battery life is good, but otherwise in real life no. Do some research before buying.

Just to help you, here are some reviews that you can check out. The pricing maybe different today.
