Hi guys, I just found a program that can benchmark SD cards
http://www.benchmarkhq.ru/english.html?/sandradl_e.html
Download it to test the speed of your SD card.
I am thinking of doing a comparsion of the cards here so would be glad if you guys could help run the test.
We try make it standardise by using the same set up example using USB 1.1? or maybe run it through camera.
What you guys think?

Tks bro!

yoz.. will be glad to help.. can we use usb 2.0 instead of 1.1?
coz if we use 1.1, then the limit may not be of the SD card but of the cardreader/camera...
will post my results of silicon power and panasonic normal cards shortly after finish dnlding

as below..
hmm if u've got spare memory cards do lend me.. i wanna bench mark a few more since i've got a usb2.0 drive..
I show only 2MB files coz it's most revelant to us taking photos...

for my Silicon Power 128MB 45X
seems like they use 150kbs as single speed..
very close to the stated speed..

Benchmark Results

2MB Files Test : 194 operation(s)/min

2MB Files Test
Read Performance : 187 operation(s)/min (6383 kB/sec, 36x)
Write Performance : 157 operation(s)/min (5359 kB/sec, 30x)
Delete Performance : 4521 operation(s)/min
File Fragments : 1.0
Combined Index : 194 operation(s)/min

Endurance Benchmark Breakdown
Repeated Sector ReWrite : 424 kB/s
Sequential Sector Write : 388 kB/s
Random Sector Write : 23 kB/s

Performance Tips
Notice 5901 : 1x=176kB/s; As some device makers use 1x=150kB/s exercise caution when comparing measured vs. published ratings.

For my Panasonic 16mb card they gave, no speed indication

nice work! unseen you are so fast 2 cards down already. can we state some testing information also so that the result will be more accurate?
eg: operation system,USB version? think card reader will also affect but guess a rough gauge will be good for us to know how good the cards are.Best is directly use our camera to test since most own one here :) .

you guys running this through the camera?

no leh.. i'm using my usb drive.. usb 2.0 drive.. coz camera thru usb 1.0 write and read speed will be limited by the 1.1 interface..
1.1 can only send data that fast, means maybe not enuff data can be sent / second enough to test..
u take photo, can write very fast, but thru 1.1 will not be able to write as fast..

usb 2.0 should be able to send data faster than the card can write..

my system config: windows XP, athlon 3200+, usb2.0

Just tested my cards. setup is AMD 2600, USB 2.0, card reader.
Benchmark Results
Magu 1 GB high speed SD card.

2MB Files Test : 180 operation(s)/min

2MB Files Test
Read Performance : 229 operation(s)/min (7817 kB/sec, 44x)
Write Performance : 107 operation(s)/min (3652 kB/sec, 20x)
Delete Performance : 782 operation(s)/min
File Fragments : 1.0
Combined Index : 180 operation(s)/min

Endurance Benchmark Breakdown
Repeated Sector ReWrite : 25 kB/s
Sequential Sector Write : 439 kB/s
Random Sector Write : 23 kB/s

Did a test on my Panasonic 16mb SD card too to use that as a gauge since set up differs

Panasonic 16mb SD card
2MB Files Test : 84 operation(s)/min

2MB Files Test
Read Performance : 134 operation(s)/min (4574 kB/sec, 25x)
Write Performance : 41 operation(s)/min (1399 kB/sec, 20x)
Delete Performance : 1219 operation(s)/min
File Fragments : 1.0
Combined Index : 84 operation(s)/min

Endurance Benchmark Breakdown
Repeated Sector ReWrite : 40 kB/s
Sequential Sector Write : 40 kB/s
Random Sector Write : 40 kB/s

Thnkas flowerpot and unseen for posting their findings.

Flowerpot it is good idea to run test on the 16mb card that panasonic bundled as a control.

Comparing to unseens results for the bundled 16mb card. Seems like the test not so accurate. like 25-30% difference in speed.

you guys tyr running the same test more then once to see if give same result?

Smaller card usually have a slower reading/writing specs as compared to bigger size ones

agreed.
anyway i ran it again.. this time i let the system run the test without me doing anything else. my read speed went to the same as flowerpot, but write speed is still stuck.. ran it on my other 16mb card, same thing.

maybe it's my card-reader. will get another one to test. will also try again when i boot up in safe mode.. wonder if my system load affects the benchmarking. :dunno:

then again, maybe i just got the lousy panasonic cards.. :(

Guess the difference not really very big, quite close. Using the 16mb as a control sld allows accurate estimation. Hope to see other brands being tested too. mmm anyone testing those high speed and normal speed branded ones? Tks

Panasonic cards are one of the best, if not, better than Sandisk.
You should try Panasonic Normal 128mb compare with the Silicon power :)

I also have the Silicon Power Ultima 128mb SD card. Bought 6mths ago at $30 only. So it is really fast?

how abt running the test on your card and post the results here? if you have a panasonic 16mb card run that too to compare with our findings. Just download the program and run it. less than 10mins.

Comparing my card magu with silicon from unseen.Think his is a better card since its has a better write speed(impt for burst) and better breakdown endurance. Expected since mine is not really branded and is cheap $120 only. But its good to note that the average combine index is close 194 vs 180 and mine had a better read speed so will be able to review pics better but not at taking pic quickly.

I beg differ..
Panasonic has the high speed series and the normal series..
the normal one are pretty slow.
High speed ones are rated 10mb/s, no competition from what i heard..
the pro series one... beyond my touch.. 20mb/s..

Erm... How to use the program?

Install the program. Run it. Under Benchmarking modules click "removable storage/flash benchmark"(the third one). Under "drive" click the drop box and chose the drive ur card reader is using to read your SD card or any card. once selected click on the refresh buttom on the bottom and the test will run.
