Well, that's beside the point, since I may be joining a company starting out as an assistant. Knowing the salary range will give me a rough estimate so that I can make my decision further.

BTW, those ppl carrying DSLR might put them in the B&S after entire fireworks thing :). And DSLRs can also be used to take family, holiday shots etc.

A couple of mths ago an international stock photography agency with a local office offered to pay me $1.6k/mth for a full time photographer's assistant job.

Pay as an assistant is not much - the market takes it you are there to learn and will move on either upwards or to a new company within 2 year max so why should they pay a decent salary. Expect to eat grass. Without experience expect something from $1000 to $1700 CPF included. It is not going to be close to your pay as an engineer. Expect to be worked - assisting work is pretty manual.

Suggest you ask the companies you are interested in directly than asking people here - MOST of them are not in a position to hire. No point knowing the "expect" salary to find no one needs an assistant.

Clang was supposed to have spent a year working foc for a product photographer to learn the ropes. Would you do the same ?

learning with a little pay is good, if no committment like childs and house, go ahead, then u will know where to go. Prepare to tigthen ur belt, cos deduct transport, handphone bills etc, u are left w little.

I always ask people this question, " what is it you want to achieve ? "

If your aim is just to get into a studio with a comfortable pay, just to start somewhere, than yes, join a studio who can pay you your "comfortable" pay.
If your aim is to learn the ropes in the field of photography you're interested in, than the photographer and his work should be more important than the pay.

If it's interest over pay, what's the point of getting the pay you're looking for if you're interested in model/people shoot and the studio you join is only doing product shoot?

So at the end of the day, What Do You Want To Achieve?

think carefully, once you start work as an assistance, you pay are so low, and you have no time to shoot free events, TFCD or pay for model shoot liao.

also, assistance may don't have chance for you to shoot own assignments, only those ku chin ku rub jobs for you to shoot.

Agreed.

As an assistant your pay may be low as you're learning. You will not be shooting anything as an assistant, even PR /events jobs will be covered by the snr assistant. If the studio shoots mainly PR/events as their bread and butter, than the photographer will be the one shoot and not you. If the studio shoots studio jobs as their main, than there will be few PR/Event jobs to shoot and when one comes along, your snr will be shooting as you're just a jur. Consider carefully, photography, on a full time basis is not as glam as many think it to be.

but in term of his skill...he can easily outdo anyone in cs...he have so many events under his belt already...can see from his portfoilo for all the events he have covered...what makes you think he going to be an assistant...

that's depends who is hire him, aka his future boss.

I won't say that he can "easily outdo anyone in CS", and I think he knows it as well.

Base on what I've seen of TS's shoot so far, my personal advise, if he wants to try the world of commercial photography, is to work as an assistant first and learn the ropes.
Of course, TS can get into a studio who is willing to employ him as an photographer even, but I doubt he'll learn much, in terms of photography, in that studio. Put it this way, would you rather be a photographer in a studio where the level of photography is the same as your own or would you rather be an assistant in a studio where the level is much higher than yourself.

i work as an asssiatant in a commerical studio for 9 months. what some of you all said is true.
The working hours is long, mostly manual work, carry this carry that, make coffee for clients, clean cameras / equipment, send CD to clients, wash toilet and no oversea allowances. take home pay $960 after CPF. Those without family commitment maybe will be able to take this type of workload.:rolleyes::sweatsm::sweatsm:

there not chance for me to shoot in the studio as my photographers have work almost everyday. they mostly shoot for magazines. once in a while when there no shoot. you start cleaning the studio. and yes i learn how to use lighting, trick of the trade and borrow their cameras but seldom have time to use them. why????. weekend studio not open.

those interested working as an assistant can PM me if they want to know more.

i still remember it takes me 6 mths to actually hold the MF camera. And also, whenever there is a mistake, its always assistance fault, no matter what.

yes, when they are in a bad mood. you will be then first one to get it.:cry:

he maybe excellent in covering events but i'm not sure if he is goin to work in some established studio as a full time event fotographer, that is if they are hiring ppl who shoot events full time.

i used to work full time in an established studio in Singapore that uses top of the range cameras, lights and all that nice gizmo. my starting pay back then was S$2k/. the first 3 months are trial period where they assess u and see if u've wat it takes to make it.

before that i work as a p.a for an expatriate fotographer in Singapore who specialises in industrial fotography. my pay was a neat S$90 from 9-5pm. o.t pay after 5pm. even on flight to the designated country, i get paid jus by sitting on the plane and reading my magazine.

i wonder why most ppl in CS think that event fotography is soooooooooo important to their portfolios esp. when event fotography nowadays is almost F.O.C.

fotographers who are keen to go into event fotography as their main core, i think it would be suicidal with or without passion.

wedding fotography, i would think, is still quite a viable option but no longer that profitable.

just my 2cents.
