do a search lah, u will find gems. ;)

I had recently acquire a zenitar 16mm fish eye. love the sharpness, color and contrast. If you want to try a russian lens, just call me to arrange to meet up, anytime (less regular working hour).

my gear are attached to my body, never leave home without them.

I am using a Minolta Camera :) .... so which russian lens can I work with? Do I need a M42 -> Minolta AF mount convertor?

Try the following:
Industar 61 LZ MC 50mm f2.8
Helios 44M-4 58mm f2
Mir-1b 37mm f2.8
Jupiter-9 MC 85mm f2
Jupiter 37A 135mm f3.5

and ofcos the famous zenitar fisheye.

These are preset lens meaning not coupling on len mount. That is why it can be use in most SLR with the adapter. With no mechanical likage, your len almost never run out of calibration and shoot at true aperture. The preset work by turning the preset ring to close to the actual aperture and then fire off the shutter. They are cheap and very good, just buy and once u know their characteristic well, u can use them on any SLR and expect consistent result.

For metering, becos there is no electronics contact, the meter will always assume wide open meaning f1.0. It doesn't matter since u are shooting at the len's real aperture. So, set the meter to "Av", that will do.

Since you are using a Pentax K mount, how did you couple the Russian lens onto it?

 How you know I use PK mount? The beauty of screw mount is that u can buy M42->whatever mount convertor. In my case, I have a original Asahi M42-PK adapter. Someone mentioned fotographix at china town got few pieces of original left for sales at $35. Buy them all if u can, K13 is selling OEM at $65 and running out of stock. Get the original cos nothing compares to it.

I have a helios 58mm lens and it takes beautiful portraits. It gives the "artistic" kind of look that I can't really describe and can't seem to find in modern affordable optics, which somehow looks a little sterile in comparison...

I got to wait until I have either a Pentax Kx or a SRT 202 for buy Russian lens ;) ...LOL .... I think I will like russian lenses :) :D

For one lens it will not be quantifiable. Thus I suggest to look for others who are like minded ;).....

Anyway, you can take a look at some of the websites :-

http://www.kievcamera.com

And others ;)

Take a look at some pictures taken from russian lenses (The flare control is outstanding !!!!) :-

No need to buy mechanical camera to enjoy the M42 screw mount russian lens. I am using an AF minolta and use a adapter to mount the lens. Just need to add exposure compensation a little for the different aperture values. I believe Canon has an adapter for M42 screw mount too. Set to aperture priority, disable the lens detect function and all you need to do is set the aperture on the lens, focus and fire away.

Grado is correct the Helios 44M is a very special len. If you like it, u will like Jupiter-9 MC 85mm. Similar characteristic.

Must buy russian lens are:
MIR-1B 37/2.8 (Grand Prix Brussels 1958 award winning len)
Industar 61L/Z 50/2.8 MC (Tessar fomula very good, can focus down to 30cm 1:3)
MC Volna-9 50/2.8 (Macro version of I-61)
Helios-44 58/2 (Zeiss Biotar formula)
Jupiter-9 MC 85/2 (Sonnar formula but character like H-44, go for the MC version. Legendary portrait len)
Jupiter-37A 135/3.5 (Sonnar formula, but improved character like I-61, abit too sharp some feel)
TAIR-11A 135/2.8 (Grand Prix Brussels 1958 award winning len)
Jupiter-21M 200/4 (Character very much like J-37A)
Tair-3 300/4.5 (Grand Prix Brussels 1958 award winning len)

Learn to use preset correctly and u will find it's a old fashion but reliable methods and it will produce on whatever slr with correct adapter. These manual gear will outlive you. :D

Click here: Friendly interest group to join

Mir and Tair are true russian design formula from ground up :)

I was thinking why MC RUBINAR MACRO 300mm f4.5 from the galley produce such soft and funny bokeh .... then I realised it is a mirror lens ;) ....

Most of the lenses produce very good pictures, either that, or the photographer is outstanding :D
