Hi all,

My canon kit len (18-55mm type 2) cannot autofocus recently and I did a search online.

I think most likely is due to the cable breaking.

can anyone advise if there is a place to buy the aperture cable locally?

Thanks :)

It's best to bring it to Canon Customer Care Center at Harbour Front

To my knowledge and judging from many other cases the manufacturer keep a very tight grip on spare parts for lenses and cameras as long as they are in production. Ebay is a possible source.
Another option is our bro fatigue, DIY specialist for cameras and lenses.
A third option could be to get the newer versions of the kit lens: either the one with IS or the newest one with IS and STM focus motor. They both have a better optical quality than the earlier versions.

Thanks Octarine

I just "copy and paste" my previous reply in another post

Most likely it is due to broken flex cable

Here's a few steps to confirm:

1. switch to MF
2. turn focusing ring counterclockwise until it stops
3. Switch back to AF
4. Focus on something about 2 meters away from you
Does it focus?

Repeat steps 1 to 4 but this time turn focusing ring clockwise
Does it focus?
A broken flex cable will focus only on one direction

Here's a DIY post if you're the kind of guy who likes to fix
