Hi All,

I tested nikon 80-200 F2.8 auto focus is bit slow with my D700(vs 24-70 F2.8) and it is better than with D90. Forgot to test with kenko tele 2x/1.4x(anybody tried it).
My doubt is comparing 80-200 with 70-200 sigma lens. I read it in many forum, all said image quality is better in 80-200 and AF is speed in sigma 70-200 sigma. Shall I go with 80-200 nikon(price is S$1620), or any suggestions. Think nikon 70-200 VRII is more than S$3000. i cant afford that much.

Thanks
Arun

You can get a used 80-200 for a lot less... and there are 4 versions of the 80-200 too, so depending on which one you are going for, and the condition, price ranges from 500 to 1200 used. And you can get a new 80-200 two touch for around 1.2k SGD if you know where to look.

As for the Sigma 70-200 OS, yes, IQ is slightly better than the 80-200 AF-D, focus is faster and the OS is great. Performance is close to the Nikon 70-200 VR1. You can get it for around 1.4+k if you know where to look.

Which one you want to get is up to you really up to you.

Thanks a lot. My plan is to stick with nikon, think nikon had resale value compare to sigma. what do you say.

U buy a len that is suitable for ur shooting style, not the resale vaule .. If u need fast af speed and os, sigma is ur only bet if u have limited budget. Getting a nikon afd which hold its resale value, but end of the day if you are not happy abt its slow focusing and no vr .. Hmmm .. Cant get ur shot, so whats the point .. ?

It is up to you...

I find the IQ of the 80-200 to be good but the bokeh can be a little distracting when there are highlights in the background.

I was not very happy with the af/mf switch of the 80-200mm. Plus if you buy either lens second hand you're unlikely to lose much money.

The push pull is still ok.. the 2 touch version is where the A/M switch is fragile.

if you re looking at 1.4K for the sigma, go for the nikkor 80-200 2.8 AFS instead. its got the speed and performance(almost) of the 70-200 VRII without the VR and extra $1500. but then its quite chunky. but definitely try the 80-200 AFS, im pretty sure it the best lens you can get in that price range.

Problem with the AFS 80-200 is that they are hard to locate nowadays, and the few sets I saw on sale in Peninsular are all overpriced... It is a very good lens though..

This lens also got a problem (just my personal POV). If you shoot at any object at it's closest focus (which is around 1.5 meter I think). Your image will have a haze type of feel to it. I dunno what's the problem. But, I sold it because of that. The latest 70-200 VRII is really an awesome lens. Too bad, it's zoom range is slightly shorter than it's competitors when not focus to infinity.
I think the Sigma might be a better choice (due to your budget). But, don't get a lemon one. Always test it before you make up your mind. Cheers.
