Hi, my wife is thinking of buying a compact 5 megapixel camera for her travel and business trips. It should have at least 3 X optical zoom and she hopes to get one camera which gives good colour composition and sharpness. Any recommendations from the experts here? Thanks.

check out the coolpix 5600, at a affordable price too...

Just to share. These are the choice that I narrow down when I was trying to get a 5MP camera the other time. All are good camera and have their own features thats better than others.
1. Sony W1 now got W5
2. Cannon s40 (4mp but quality close to 5mp)
3. Digimage X50

Features that attracts
Sony-AA batt,2.5" LCD,Manual controls
Canon-Small,stylish,sharp pic
X50-small,easy to hold

All are small and the main criteria is to have large LCD, at least 2". Pentax,Nikon, panasonic and olympus modes are good but Pentax and Nikon LCD are small 1.8" and felt Nikon's 2" wasn't really as big and Olympus limited to 512md XD cards so I did not consider them.Heard Panasonic batt are a big drain and the better looking series are not cheap. Casio are great but the colour of slightly tinted from wat I heard and saw.
Just wat I felt, Maybe better models have arrived by now.Think other experts will know more.I am just a noobie. Kodak looks good to me considering the price

Budget ?

fujifilm F10?

I thought the ISO performance is quite revolutionary for P&S. the ISO800 is actually useable.

My budget is around $600. Which of the recommended models has good battery life and produces rich colours and sharp pictures?

I recommend the Nikon 5900, which I bought from John 3:16 last week. It's well within your budget too.

I recommend the Canon A series. I am a user of A70 and found that it works well. Maybe these series are bulky. But it can be used with AA batteries. Panasonic Lumix series maybe also good as it has image stabilizer, but it consume the battery power too much, and you need a backup battery.

For a lady who want a compact camera, I would not recommend a Canon.

You may like to consider the Kodak LS755. Saw it advertised by Harvey Norman a few weeks back at $499. For 5MP with 2.5" LCD and 3x optical packed in a compact body only at $499, I feel it is a good price. Colour reproduction, Kodak is a specialist in this area. Sharpness wise, they are using the German Schnieder.

You might wanna look into

Pentax Optio 50
Fujifilm FinePix F10 Zoom
Olympus mju 500 Digital

Another model I would recommend is one of the latest model in market... Olympus IR-300. This model is 5MP with 3x optical zoom with a dock & done convenience concept. It is compact and look quite stylish in my opinion. It has a 2" LCD. Compared to the previously launched IR-500, this design is so much better!

RRP at $649, but you should be able to grab one below $600 at the recommended shops.

I second the Canon A95. Solid camera.

I have briefly read through quite a number of reviews... i think canon a95 is good... i think currently there's a promotion going on as well.

They are throwing in a 256MB CF card, a backpack and I heard there's a free training course thrown in as well.
