Any lens can do landscape. Any lens can do portraits.

It all depends on what kind of landscapes you want. and what kind of portraits you are looking for.

Maybe you want to read a bit more about Field of View and perspective, depending on focal length used. Read through the newbies guide. Although technically possible it is mostly not recommended to use wide angle lenses (especially UWA) for portraits due to resulting perspective. Longer lenses as usually used for portraits (>50mm) can also be used for landscapes - depending what you intend to shoot / show.
With regards to the lenses listed: please keep in mind the crop factor. 28mm of the zoom lenses is not very wide, on 1.6x crop (Canon) it will result in a field of view equivalent to 45mm. That's roughly 'normal view', neither wide angle not telephoto.

For your D60 kit lens, the 18mm will do a fine job too.
If u are looking for a wider angle, below are some popular choices for landscape:
1) 10-20mm (Sigma)
2) 10-24mm (Nikon)
3) 11-16mm (Tokina)
4) 12-24mm (Nikon, Tokina)
Most imptly, read up or try out to see if u like the wide angle effect.

Any lens can do the job, depends on the effect u desired out of it.. FOV varies thats all..

Technically they are two extremes

Generally in portraits you need shallow DOF where as landscape requires wide DOF, which is in general technically different.

Portraits require lower f number whereas landscape requires higher f number. Portraits generally requires a range of 50 - 135mm, where as landscape generally less than 35mm.

Having said all these, people are happy with their PnS and there are people who dream some more Primes when they already having all the primes like 15, 24, 35, 50, 85, 137, 200, 400;p

It's up to you, how much money you are willing to pay and what kind of precision makes you comfortable.

or something better like a 17-50 or 17-55 f2.8.

If on FF, a 24-70.

Since you have a DSLR... Why not leverage the main point of getting a DSLR, and get 2 lenses? The right lens for the shot, that's where a DSLR shines.

Looking at your profile, it seems you are using a D60.

Please note that quite a number of lenses mentioned in this thread WILL NOT autofocus on your camera body.

MF can be done. But it gets difficult with UWA lenses on a viewfinder as small as the D60.
