Will be on a working trip to Shanghai for a few days. Looking at schedule seems that I might only be able to squeeze a few hours off for own time.

Thus checking to see if there good recommendations for shops for Pentax stuff or accessories in Shanghai.

Thanks

The 2 biggest camera malls are:

星光摄影器材城 (Starlight (Xing Guang) Camera Equipment Mall)
鲁班路288号(近斜土路) (No.288, LuBan Road, near XieTu Road)
Either take a cab there.
Or take the subway to Line 4, LuBan Road station (地铁4号线,鲁班路站). When at the station, Take number 1 exit. Once you come out of the station, you will be at a junction, turn left, and walk around 300m to the next junction. You will see the mall across the street.
Floor 1 are camera stores (bodies and lenses), Floor 2 are mostly accessories, Floor 3 is 2nd hand market, Floor 4 is studio flash and flash/studio accessories. I never went up to Floor 5.

and

环龙照相器材城 (Huan Long Camera equipment mall)
秣陵路3号 上海火车站对面 (across the street from Shanghai Railway station)
Take metro line 1 alight at Shanghai Railway station stop (地铁一号线,上海火车站)
Orient Photo's HQ is in HuanLong and it is quite big there. You can ask any one in OP in SimLimSq for the exact unit number in the mall.

Do note it has been raining cat and dogs in Shanghai these 2 days with lightning and thunder. When it is not raining weather is warm at around 28-33 deg C. It was blazing hot for a few days at 36-37 deg C three days back. Dress appropriately.

Hi daredevil123,
Need some advice from you on Shanghai shopping as I will be going there in Sep.:
1. What are good buys (cheaper than S'pore) in Shanghai for made in China camera accesories, such as filters, flashes, flash triggers, camera bags, etc.
2. Are the shops that you mentioned safe, honest in their dealings.
3. What precautions do we need to take when shopping there.
Thanks and regards.

1. Many things are good buys. Some lenses are too. But you have to do your homework. Some accessories are cheaper, some are about the same, some are more expensive. Generally, things made in China are cheaper. Things imported are more expensive. Know your prices.

2. Most of them are. Since every store is in the same building, they are very competitive. But for everything you buy I suggest you ask a couple of stores to make sure. But generally, the price quote for lenses or cameras will not differ by much.

3. If you buy lenses and want warranty, remember to ask for Tax reciept ("Fa Piao" in chinese). You have to pay a premium for that receipt. Around 4%.

Finally had a chance to pop down to 星光摄影器材城 (Starlight (Xing Guang) Camera Equipment Mall). Did not have much time only about an hour plus.

Mostly Cannon and Nikon shops. Saw a couple that carried Pentax. One was fairly crowded, there were at least 3 people buying the K7 or Kx when I went in.

Was very tempted by DFA100mm WR. Opening price was about 3850 CNY which seem pretty good. Did not dare negotiate price further as it will be too tempting....

What a pity ... it's the best lens you can buy for that amount of money :)

Same place. All the shops are crammed into those 2 malls.

Go there are ask for pricing from a few stores.

Most benro products are cheaper in China. Sirui products are cheaper (or same) in Singapore.

Went to 星光摄影器材城 today to look around.
Most of the shops are Nikon and Canon....only saw 2 Pentax shops.
I asked about the Sigma F1.4 50mm lens. The price is RMB 2920 (about S$634).
Is this price reasonable or not?

You have to get what you need or want.

Unless you are buying as a gift for us, then we will tell you what you should get.

For those who has never been there. This is what XingGuang (Starlight) looks like.

I seriously do not know what to recommend you if you ask like that.
Hmmm lets see, I recommend a 2nd hand Hasselblad meduim format camera. You should be able to get it on 3rd floor.

OR...

You can just read post #4 in this thread.

OR...

You just go there and browse. See what you like, you buy.

:dunno:

Hi bro,
Thanks for your info. Sorry for the late acknowledgement and appreciation. I did not open this thread until today. It is said: "Better late than never".
Cheers and God Bless.
