hi guys (and gals)

need your advice. Am looking for an affordable and reliable PDA /palm-top (any brand, no need to be fancy), I mainly need it to help record the zillion tasks and deadlines I have to meet everyday and to store information on contacts etc.

Wonder if anyone of you are currently using one or have a good recommendation for me? Which are the best ones around? I do not need the mobile phone function ones cos I just upgraded my hp.

where would be a good place to buy one (Funan? Harvey Norman?) and do you know if there is any GSS on palm-tops now?

Thanks for your help :)

Try the HP6828... its good..

palm TX.
i have once which i don't use.
will let it go for $300.

I am a pda user since pda was the keyboard type. I had 2 windows CE devices before and approx 6 palm devices. I prefer palm platform. I was once a windows CE user and once I switched to palm. That's it.

My personal opinion
Palm is meant for keeping deadlines, calendars, etc. It is gd for personal time management due to the workflow, etc. And it seldom crashes.

Pocket PC devices are generally more for multimedia and web purposes. When comes to scheduling stuff, it sux because of the workflow.

When I refer to workflow, u have to try it to understand. Use the calendar and to do function and u will immediately noticed the difference.

Take the offer of $300. My wife uses it. Its gd.

so wad brand is good arh? I also thinking of getting one.. making a pocket pc.. HP/ Dopod/O2 ritez?

I not sure of pocket pc leh. Cannot stand the workflow. I always recommend palm. Palm will be palm TX or Treo. I am currently using the treo 650. It has the best sms system in comparison with other systems. THe sms system records the messages like I say, Cindy says, so on and so forth. Due to the key entry system, it is very efficient.
Dun get Palm Life Drive or the version before Palm Tx. I sold the Palm Life Drive away. The performance of both sux. Palm Zire 72 is okay.

thanks for all the recommendations.

I called up 2 shops in Funan y'day evening and they said if my home PC is on Windows XP, then buy HP as Palm is more compatible with Macintosh. But according to what has been suggested in this thread, Palm seems to meet my needs more (e.g. scheduling appointments, keeping notes etc.) I dun need it to surf web or download stuff.

So now, I'm confused. CreaXion, can you advice? I'm totally new to PDAs. ALso, is it recommended to buy 2nd hand PDAs since electronic products tend to be quite fragile?

Rubbish. What rubbish is that shop talking about? Palm is built for PC. Not for mac. In fact, there are a lot of things in Palm that Mac cannot support properly yet as far as my knowledge goes. I suggest u go Edpol System in Funan. Same floor as PK They specialised in Palm products. The boss has a nickname called Professor Palm. They would allow customers to test their Palm products for a long period of time. They are really knowledgeable in Palm products. They also offer 12 months interest free. My palm products all from there.

If your needs are scheduling, I suggest u go for Palm. The workflow is better. I suggest Palm TX and it is bundled with documents to go which is fully compatible with MS office EXCEL and WORD. Synchronised without fear. I used Palm Treo 650.

To backup your data, you can either synchonise with your MS outlook or Palm desktop software which is bundled with it. For me, I prefer the third party software, Agendus Palmdesktop software because the software have the seven habits quadrants.

If u have money, go for first hand.

Saw Today's and Dell is having promo for the 624Mhz @ $477......I and currently using the 520Mhz version fpr almost a year liao and it is rock stable with no problem what so ever

I am thinking of getting one for wify as she can do power point presentation using this instead of the notebook :)

I am using Palm Treo650, my usage is on keeping appointments (model shoots, meetings, etc) and keeping ppl contacts (email, hp no, address, etc), and sometimes use to show photos to ppl. Some of my friends use O2. My general observation, O2 design looks better while Palm Treo is ugly, but O2 is not user-friendly, no alphabet keypad, easy to crash, Palm Treo is more stable and reliable.

Fully Agree. Treo 650 may not have the form factor unlike O2 but in terms of stability, it is gd. Treo 650 can configure all the alphabet keys to an application or a contact. Can u imagine how convenient when u press one key and u already started dialling. However, if u are looking for a PDA only, Palm TX is my best bet. Pocket PCs devices has better screens and more for multimedia purposes. However, TX resolution has improved quite a lot. It is gd to note that there is a third party software that pushes the palm to produce super solid music.

Palm users seldom change to pocket pc once they converted. It is just like mac users seldom convert to pc. I think it is abt the same analogy. It is the ease of use that make the two platforms different.

Thanks CreaXion and Astin for your explanation on Palm.

After reading your posts, I think I'll probably buy Palm Tx. Palm Treo sounds good but since I don't need its phone function. Also, I think Palm Tx will be cheaper right? I think I'll visit Edpol system over the weekend to find out about the 'trial' use and prices. Hopefully, the sales people there are friendly and patient as I know next to nothing about PDAs!

By the way, how does Big Kahuna's recommendation of Dell Axim compare to Palm Tx?

Most importantly, I want a PDA that's user-friendly, idiot-proof and stable. :)

Try any pocket pc devices. The interface is the same for its scheduling functions. Dell Axim shd not deviate that much.

By the way, when i say try, they can let u try it there for a long period of time. I saw one customer tested the device for almost 1 hour before. Not bring back. Sorry if I have misled u.

am using a palm TX.

Good for scheduling and has a good workflow management. I use it to listen to music as it acts a mp3 player and can also in theory watch movies but I say in theory because screen is a little too small for movie viewing. Can surf net via wifi but note that it drains the power really quickly. Can literally see the battery bar dropping. I use it to take notes and hence saves me having to get a note book and scrawling my notes everywhere. Also I store all my contacts in it.

Look around Sim Lim and you can get good deals if you ask around. Some shops offer good discounts if you pay by cash or nets. I got mine at 468 with 512 SD card.

If I am correct, EDpol also offer around that price provided its cash or nets. Need to note that Edpol allows one to one exchange policy if item is found faulty within 1 month.

hey, CenXion, you did not mislead me, dun worry. I misread the info myself hehe. I'm going down to Edpol this Sat to have a look at the Palm Tx. Seems like you know them quite well, do you think if I I quote your name, they'll be able to give me better discounts/service? ;) Also, you mentioned you use 3rd party software like Agendus Palmdesktop, are they free (downloadable from web) or must we pay for it. The 7 habits quadrant thingy sound useful...I wonder after I get my PDA, can I get your advice on what softwares I should install so that my PDA will not become a white elephant.

thanks Century Egg for sharing your experience with Palm Tx. Looks like Palm Tx is quite user-friendly. When did you buy your Palm Tx? Do you mind if I PM you and ask you which shop from SimLim did you buy yours from cos I dun have a clue which shops in Sim Lim are reliable? I usually frequent Funan.

My wife and I have been purchasing our palm pdas and pdaphones from him. The reason why we go back to him is because of his excellent service. When we have some problems with the palm, he will service it for us and gives us advice. Another reason why we go back to him is because it is a palm specialty shop. U can find a lot of accessories there. If I am correct, whenever he sell his palm products, it will always come with a high quality screen protector. That screen protector is worth $20. They will do such an excellent job until u will not know that there is a screen protector. Please confirm with him on this.

Agendus is not free. There are some other substitutes. Usually palm software comes with a one month free trial. U can try before u buy. That is what I always do.

Really very thorough. Cannot believe your eyes when u see the screen. Not noticeable at all. They have a lot of regular customers there.
