Beyond Space-Time Continuum
My friend's comp just blew and now he is looking to replace it. Anyone got recommendations on a stable system that can be used for graphics and a bit of gaming? He is thinking of salvaging some of his old drives (Optical drive, HDD etc). Best if he can play SC2 on it when it comes out.

1. MB
2. CPU
3. PSU
4. Vidcard
5. Casing

Something under 1.5K and can reuse his IDE drives and still be able to use sata drives in the future.

Thanks.

theres such a wide market of all these components. its really his own preference.
im running on a Asus P5B SE motherboard, Nvidia Gerforce 8800 GTS, OCZ rams, intel core 2 quad Q6600,
this are just the brand names. and i think it will fit the budget u mentioned.

personally i go with

1. MB - any $200+/- board with full compatibility with the rest of the component - $200
2. CPU - either the Q6600 or the new E8400 - $450
3. PSU - any of the more reputable brand 430W+/-, ie CoolerMaster 430W - $100
4. Vidcard - 8800GT 512MB - $400
5. Casing - Go down SLS and pick yourself... - probably <$200 for the less fanciful cases
6. RAM - 4x 1GB 800Mhz - $200
7. HDD - 1x 500GB - be surprise how much a new HDD can speed up the system if the current one ain't that fast... $200

probably go past the 1.5k by a tiny little

alternative, just pick any of those pre-configured system http://www.videopro.com.sg/getdata.php?id=173

probably

get the 7200.11 500gb 32mb cache one... good stuff...

for OS, can try using raptor... if budget allows.

and if get Q6600 no point getting 800mhz ram cos its using 667 FSB, i am using my 800mhz CL4 at 667, cos i flashed my bios on my P5K pro and it ran unstable. kinda stupid and overkill.

800Mhz becos its almost the same price as 667, tho they both perform pretty close. :bsmilie:
I do have friend running q6600 and 800mhz ram, so far no problem from him. but like you say, there wun be any performance gain, maybe you even lose some becos of the higher CL, but the 800mhz might come in useful if one decided to '*ahem* overclock.

ok i gotta say sth, no matter wad u choose, a reliable and stable PSU is required. 1st of all, Coolermaster PSUs are NOT reliable.

u need a PSU of at least 450W and above.

for relatively cheaper brands of PSU, u can try FSP, Verudium..
better brands would be Acbel, OCZ..
