Recommend Ext flash for hacked 300d

Hi, currently thinking of getting an ext flash for my 300d.
Purpose: fill flash for taking human portraits, flash for macro photography.

Can anyone recommend a flash which can handle the above situations? I'm hoping to get a cheap one, so pls don't recommend ext flashes like 580ex.. I'm fine with third party flashes too, as long as they are capable of satisfying my need.

stick to the 420ex or 550ex second hand then.
