U mean when lens in autofocus mode, we do not need to use the rear focus ring? Only in manual mode? There are some distance markings on the rear ring.

Not sure about this particular lens, but in most lenses, a focus ring does just that - it allow for manual focus.

Um. Yeah. Why would you, under normal circumstances, want to also be manual focusing if the camera is doing it for you already?

Those markings, by the way, are focus distance marks.

there is no front or real focusing ring on a 18~70mm lens.

There is only ONE focal/zoom ring, and ONE focus ring.

To use focal/zoom ring, use your fingers, hold the focal/zoom ring and turn, you able to change the focal length of the lens.

To use focus ring, use your fingers, hold the focus ring and turn, you able to change the focusing of the lens, you view thru the viewfinder, to see the image get into focus.

For more detail instruction, please read your camera, and lens user manual.

hope this help.

The 18-70 should allow manual focus override. This means that you can manual focus even if the camera is on AF mode. This will help you if AF is hunting...Which usually does not happen with a >F2.8 lens.

Not true.
Hunting occurs because it is dependent on the subject you trying to focus. For e.g. lighting conditions, colour/constrast, lines, subject size etc. In other words, it is your camera's AF drive that is fooled.

Go take 50 f1.8 or 70-200 f2.8, try focusing on a dark object. Or a carpet of continuous colour. Or focus through a fence. Or when your subject takes a small proportion of your frame. I bet you hunting will happen.
