RIP = Rastor Image Processing.

Rastorize your print job into an image before printing. You can preview these images, do scaling, orientation, re-arrange/tile etc. before transferring them to the printer or film etc.

Last time when I worked on the AGFA Chromapress, we got a 4-CPU PowerPC to do the heavy ripping ;).

Btw, RIP can also be applied on consumer printers ;) with the right software/hardware (usually not cheap).
