I have one of those cheapo tripods that came with a those pan/tilt heads (I think thats what you call them)

I am just wondering how those ball heads attach to a tripod. Are these fittings standardised across all tripods?

I am able to remove the original head by unscrewing the locking handles and pulling it out.

Thanks

The industry has standardised on 2 head fitting sizes, 1/4" and 3/8"

However there's a catch. A lot of cheaper tripods don't have removable heads.

Thanks!

Another question, I got myself a Manfrotto 679 Monopod.
Any ball heads to recommend? Not a pro, just want a servicable one!

No recommendations from me, I never use a ballhead with a monopod as it defeats the purpose of a monopod :)

Oh, is that so? Would you care to elaborate on that? Then what kind of "head" is suitable for a monopod? or no "head" needed, just slap the camera on?

i use the Manfrotto #234 swivel head... it's not a ball head but just swings one way (which is ok on a monopod). it's cheap and good also... the QR version costs $18 @ CP i think...
