best to get this info from the shops

lots of things to consider, like what you plan to shoot and how you like to do it
as different dslrs have different strenghts and weaknesses
eventually it is up to you to discover them and use it to your advantage.

yes, magazines, books, friends, trial and error, courses

again it depends on what you are going to shoot
some people buy flash some buy tripod
but you should be getting a dry cabi next

for a rough guide you can check the advertisments and the equipment forum for price lists
but to make your decision you must go to the shops and feel the camera first.

it depends on your choice of camera

D50 at AP - abt 1150 - with len,bag and 1 GB card.

D70 at AP - abt 1650 - lens, bag and 2GB card.

Is this a good deal?

oh? izzit? how much :D

If you really wan a cheap DSLR...go for Nikon D50. At least its a Nikon..next time can upgrade the body and keep the lens...I believe u will get lens after getting a DSLR :sweatsm: cos of the BBBB virus here. Go AP or CP ..should be less than 1.2K for D50 Kit. If you wanna pay abit more go for Canon 350D Kit..should be less than 1.5K

i would suggest a D50, if not, a D70s would be much better.... you wont outgrown this for a long time i think.

hmmm..... jus go and read more, get more books from library. read stuff on the web.

the next thing to do after getting a DSLR is to bring it out and shoot! no point buying and keeping it at home....

maybe u can get a telephoto lens after u get a kit set. it would cover u very well already...

wah thanks for all the advise hor.. :D

so it is nikon D50 vs canon 350D

i think i will only get the camera and wont get the lens for a LONG time LOL
cuz i will be overly broke by then...

thanks again :D

Go for Nikon if you only want 1 lens. the kit lens and/or the 18-200VR is excellent.

If got $$$ then any system no difference.

The cheapest 1st hand DSLR is the *ist DL (not the D50 or *ist DL2). If you do not already have existing Nikon lenses or flash, there is no compelling reason why should not consider Pentax. ;p

Do consider the Olympus E500 as well.. ;)

If u'll only get the body with kit lens.. can skip the 350D cos the kit lens is of poorer quality. IMHO, the best kit lens to come with the body is with the E500 followed by the *ist DL and D50..

AFAIK, from the prosumer level DSLR, the best kit lens so far is only from Nikon D70/D70s kit and Olympus E300/330/500.
D50 kit lens is not as good as above from Nikon.

Regards,
Arto.

I think For a buget of $1.4k u can consider..

1. Nikon D50 with kit lens at around $1.2k
2. Pentax *ist DL with kit lens at around $1k
3. Olympus with dual kit lens at around $1.5-1.6k (then sell off the 40-150mm lens ;) )

U should read up on the reviews, pros and cons of each model. The above cams are fine for most casual shooters, but u really need to go handle the cams before u'll know which one u like.. ;)

as to what you will buy after you get DSLR.. this is what i found myself buying after my first DSLR (call it BBB virus i dunno!)

external flash - because i shoot a lot indoors and really couldnt stand the built in flash.
charger + batteries - pretty much a mandatory buy once u get an external flash.
extra memory cards - 1 gig is definitely not enough for a days shoot, or if you go on holiday.
bags - 1 small bag for just the camera+lens and a crumpler for photoshoots which can take my camera and all my lenses + flash.
dry cab - currently have 5 lenses (2 old ones from SLR, kit lens, a 28-75 & cheap & good 50mm). so to keep them all fungus free, a dry cab was quite important.
software - adobe CS (and theres lots of other add ons & Plug ins to tempt u)
reading material - cant live on the manuals alone, so have to figure in some textbooks on photography.

On the to-buy list -
tripod/ head
a 70-200
sensor cleaning kit.
5 in 1 reflector.
portable storage unit.

so be prepared....

Question Time again:

Ok.. after careful consideration...
i think i will go for D70 or D70s cuz technically both not much different...

i was thinking

Should i get a brand new D70s Kit? or

Get a second hand D70s body or kit or D70 body or kit....
and if i get a second hand. what do i look for
how do i know if it is working fine since i never use DSLR b4
what to check.. yada yada
is it worth it to buy a second hand?

which book that u guys recommend that i should look into .. at the moment :D
any good magazine?

questions like...
where do i learn which flash to buy for example..
how i know what lens to buy..
what lens is for what purpose.. yada yada

:D

Thanks for all the guidance :D
