If you are going to get serious with photography I recommend you get the whole series but they'll set you back like anything from $300+ to $1k if you include high range type like Lee Filters of better. If you are on budget get the basic UV & CPL & ND first. If you do lots of nature landscapes a GND set is recommended for that one off satisfaction.Hi all, just wanna check with u guys abt filter. I don't agree with recommending people to get UV, CPL, ND filters especially if they don't sound like they know how to use 'em.If you are going to get serious with photography I recommend you get the whole series but they'll set you back like anything from $300+ to $1k if you include high range type like Lee Filters of better. UV will be on 90% of the time for usual protection for the elements & CPL/ND/GNDs will be on a need to use basis. Good luck in your hunt

Hey bro, for a noob a basic UV is recommended cos cleaning the filter is easier than the lens per se lah. To me a CPL & ND are more for experimenting cos you won't know what until you find out for yourself right. I always believe in 'Practice makes perfect' & not preparing for the Olympics by overly read, listen or watching how other ppl do it lah.I don't agree with recommending people to get UV, CPL, ND filters especially if they don't sound like they know how to use 'em.
Just because these are the more commonly-used filters, doesn't mean every photographer should go out and get them.
The best is to arm oneself with the knowledge about what these filters do, then go out and buy appropriately.
I personally don't use UV filters on my lenses, even though every Tom Dick and Harry says UV filters are a must-buy.
I know what you mean... :angel:Hey bro, for a noob a basic UV is recommended cos cleaning the filter is easier than the lens per se lah. Anyway ultimately it's the TS decision what to buy for his/her own benefits lah.
Cool heh?
I used to mount a UV filter on my kit lens (Hoya HMC) but realized it caused ghosting on some occasions, and it wasn't really much easier to clean...
more ex than the UV(0) skylight leh...!Cheapo. With a capital C :bsmilie:

I used to mount a UV filter on my kit lens (Hoya HMC) but realized it caused ghosting on some occasions, and it wasn't really much easier to clean. Especially when using CPL, I found it really troublesome to unscrew the UV, then keep it, then screw on the CPL.
Most of the time the lens is just covered with dust, which is fairly easy to blow off.
yup I know...Bro, it is cool either ways, to filter up or not filter up. But, you already know this but I am just saying it out for TS's sake, best to remove all filters when shooting at night or twilight.
yup I know...
My point is we should encourage newbies to find out more first, rather than go "oh, when you're starting out, you must buy ____ and _____ and ____ coz you'll definitely need it"

When I first started out, like you I got no freaking idea of the so many terminologies on the lenses, cams so I enrolled in a few basic to intermediate classes, bought 2 yrs worth of mags, videos & books to read, scourge the internet for infos, go for outings and stil i guess I'm only 20% in the knowledge of photography. I bought 5 bodies, 15+ lenses from UWA to tele to Macro to superzooms, DX & FX, lots of accessories like UV,CPL,GND, Tianya& Lee filters, etc and slowly after experimenting for 2 yrs+ I finally I got it, but just scratching the surface to the world of photography!
So be patience and develop slowly my friend. Most ppl wanted to be rich but how many are really committed to become rich? so only time will tell so long as you are committed.
